AZUSA, Calif. – After an opening weekend in Northern California during which they logged to convincing victories, the Seattle Pacific Falcons knew things would be much tougher when they journeyed to Southern California this weekend.

They were right.

Cydnie Jones scored 18 points, and Azusa Pacific led from start to finish on Saturday night to beat SPU at the West Region Crossover Classic women's basketball tournament in Felix Event Center, 70-56.

That outcome came on the heels of Friday's 73-60 loss to UC San Diego.

Junior guard Hannah Rodrigues (Eugene, Ore.) came off the bench to lead the Falcons (2-2) with 12 points. Sophomore guard Courtney Hollander (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden Christian HS) added 11, along with a team-high seven rebounds.

Azusa Pacific (5-0) scored the first five points of the game and quickly built a 12-2 lead. SPU never got any closer than eight after that, the last time at 14-6 midway through the first quarter.

"They're a very good team, very experienced," SPU coach Julie Heisey said. "They hit some 3s and came out and shot 51 percent in the first half, and we could not buy a basket. We had good shots, but we just couldn't score. We had a few untimely turnovers, and that just hurt us."

For the game, the Falcons hit just 29.3 percent from the field (17 of 58), including only 15 percent (3 of 20) from 3-point range. Azusa shot 49.1 percent (26 of 53), and was 35 percent from downtown (7 of 20).

SPU trailed by 18 at halftime, 36-18, before getting as close as 11 at 49-38 with 7:19 left in the game. But a 9-2 run by the Cougars in the next 1:32 pushed the lead back to 18 at 58-40, effectively clinching it with 5:47 to go.

"I was really proud of our second half. We came out and did a fantastic job," Heisey said. "We out-rebounded them (38-37), we had 15 offensive rebounds (APU had just eight), and we outshot them at the line (19 of 23, compared to 11 of 19).

"But the difference was we shot just 29 percent from the field and had 20 turnovers, and that just kills you."

The Falcons limited Azusa leading scorer Kelly Hardeman to just 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting. Hardeman came averaging 17, along with 11 rebounds. She did have 10 boards on Saturday.

Seattle Pacific concludes a five-game November road schedule on Tuesday in a non-conference contest at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego at 5:30 p.m.
