SEATTLE – Brendan Carroll led all scorers with 28 points, but it wasn't enough for Seattle Pacific against NCAA Division I competitor Washington, which won 98-80 on Thursday in a men's basketball exhibition game at Alaska Airlines Arena.

The game marked the season opener for the Division II Falcons, who host Evergreen State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion. That will be the final tune-up for SPU before the regular season begins on the road Nov. 13.

SPU drew within five points, at 60-55, when Gilles Dierickx made a layup with 13:08 left to play. The host Huskies steadily pulled away after that, scoring 15 of the next 20 points.

UW eventually stretched the margin to as many as 24 points, at 88-64, when Noah Dickerson made a layup with 6:03 remaining.

"We play these games to try to get better," said Coach Ryan Looney, who is starting his seventh season at SPU. "There were some moments, especially in the first half, where things were going well for us.

"But we also found out some areas where we definitely need to improve. We didn't handle pressure all that well, we obviously didn't shoot it that well from the free throw line and we made some pretty crucial mental mistakes out of timeouts that have to be cleaned up as well."

The Falcons committed 22 turnovers while forcing 19 UW miscues. They shot 63 percent from the line, making 26 of 41.

Carroll hit 10 of 18 shots from the field, including 4-for-10 shooting beyond the arc. While exhibition statistics are not reflected in a player's official totals, his output Thursday was 13 points more than Carroll has ever scored in an SPU uniform. His regular-season high is 15 points, established on Jan. 4, 2013 against Saint Martin's.

"He needs to take the next step with a guy like Riley Stockton graduating last year," Looney said. "Brendan played well in our scrimmage last week and then followed it up today. Hopefully this will be something that's consistent for him."

Mitch Penner scored 14 points for SPU and Dierickx had 11.

Penner averaged 13.6 points for the Falcons' 24-8 squad last year. He is their top returning scorer.

"It was good to see Mitch be able to do some of the same things against bigger, longer guys," said Looney.

The lone returning starter, Andrew Andrews, led six Huskies double-figure scorers with 21 points. Dickerson added 17, Dejounte Murray 16 and Marquese Chriss 11 David Crisp and Dominic Green each chipped in 10 points.

UW shot 58 percent (36 of 62) and hit 9 of 19 treys. The Falcons countered with 46-percent shooting (24 of 52), a figure that featured 55-percent accuracy (11 of 20) after intermission. The visitors made 6 of 20 shots from 3-point range.

The score was tied three times and there were four lead changes during the first half.

The Huskies opened an early 15-7 advantage before SPU rallied with 11 unanswered points. Will Parker started the surge at 13:55 with two free throws and Carroll hit back-to-back baskets.

Gilles Dierickx
Dierickx capped the spree on a pair of free throws 10:41 before halftime that provided the Falcons largest lead at 18-15. A former Husky, who transferred prior to this season, Dierickx is the first 7-footer in SPU history.

"Gilles did very well. He played hard," said Looney. "The rest of us didn't do a very good job getting him the ball enough."

The Falcons lead was erased 14 seconds later when Matisse Thuybulle hit a 3-pointer to even the score 18-18.

SPU claimed its final lead, at 22-20, on a jumper by Dierickx with 8:42 left in the first half.

UW scored then next 13 points, five of them from Green. He capped the run with a 3-pointer at 5:04 that created a 33-22 cushion.

The Huskies led 47-38 at halftime on the strength of 12 turnovers they turned into 15 points.

Looney is anxious to return to action Saturday afternoon when the Falcons entertain Evergreen State.

"There's definitely some areas where we need to get better and all of us need to be hungry to improve that on Saturday."
