Gilles Dierickx led six double-figure scorers with 18 points for Seattle Pacific, which completed its men's basketball exhibition slate Saturday with a 98-65 win over Evergreen State at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons scored 98 two days after giving up that total in a 98-80 loss across town versus Washington. They start playing for real next week, opening the regular season in St. George, Utah at the Dixie State Classic.
SPU meets Concordia of California on Friday before clashing with host Dixie State on Saturday.
"We're excited to get started," said Coach
Ryan Looney, who directed SPU into the playoffs in each of his first six seasons.
"There is definitely no warm-up from here on out. Most of our nights we are playing West Region Division II teams and a lot of them are teams that have been in the national tournament multiple times."
Saturday's opponent was an NAIA competitor from Olympia, Wash. The Geoducks took four early leads, the last at 7-6 on a 3-pointer by Danny Powell with 13:42 left in the first half.
The Falcons then staged a 21-4 surge, fueled by six points from
Sam Simpson, to go ahead for good at 27-11 with 7:26 left in the period.
SPU owned a 43-29 halftime advantage, a margin that increased to as many as 35 points during the second half.
The first 7-footer in program history, Dierickx came to SPU after playing two years at Washington. He made 8 of 12 shots from the field on Saturday.
"I was pleased, but in all reality Gilles can still play harder on offense and demand the ball more," Looney said. "If he gets to the point where he understands how much we'll be committed to getting it to him, he can be pretty special."
Mitch Penner added 15 points for the Falcons, who also got 14 from Simpson and 12 apiece from
Brendan Carroll and
Will Parker.
Bryce LeavittBryce Leavitt filled up the stat sheet, compiling 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Evergreen was led by the 19 points of Alix Hernandex, and teammate Taylor Drey scored 11.
The Falcons shot 70 percent after halftime (21 of 30) to finish at 64 percent for the game (37 of 58).
"We've got guys who can shoot it, there's no question about that. The second half we did a fantastic job making an adjustment on offense," Looney explained.
"We didn't have anyone stopping the ball, it moved extremely fast. When we did that and shared it in the second half we scored 55 points and shot 70 percent from the floor."
Included in that total was 11-for-21 accuracy from 3-point range led by Parker's perfect effort on four attempts.
"Will had a nice night," said Looney. "The tempo of the game always changes a little bit when he gets in. He's able to push it up and down the floor a little bit faster which gives us a little bit different dynamic."
Looney believes the Falcons benefited from their tune-up games.
"We played the two exhibition games to learn and try to get better. Over the past week we've definitely found some areas where we can grow. Defensively we have to be committed to being nastier. And we found out in the second half tonight that we're much better offensively when we move and share the ball."
