Complete GNAC indoor women's pentathlon results (HTML)NAMPA, Idaho –
Maliea Luquin said last weekend that she was looking forward to "just getting some big numbers" in the pentathlon at this week's Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
On Friday, the Seattle Pacific junior got lots of them.
Luquin posted personal-best marks in three of the five events, including a first-in-her-life high jump clearance of 5 feet, and finished with a PR total of 3,372 points to snare third place at Jackson's Track in the Idaho Center.
That score was a monster 588 points more than the 2,784 she put up as a freshman in 2012. It also was high enough to put Luquin onto the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying list, and is among the top 30 in the country.
"That was a little above for what I was aiming," Luquin said. "Last night, we were talking about how to tackle this meet, and I said I wanted national provisional."
For the second year in a row, the Falcons had three competitors in the pentathlon – and all three were among the top eight finishers to score some vital team points.
Sophomore
Maddi Hommes (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden HS) had PR performances in the high jump (5-1 ¾) and long jump (16-1 ½), then finished second among the 11 competitors in the meet-ending 800 meters to secure fifth place overall with 3,209 points. That easily beat her freshman year score of 3,136.
Along with the second place in the 800, Hommes' high jump mark was good for a third-place tie.
Cheryl Hong, also a sophomore, came up with a big run in the 800, taking third in that race to climb into eighth with 2,903 and add another team point to Seattle Pacific's total. Hong (Federal Way, Wash. / Jefferson HS) had a personal-best time of 2:28.61 in the 800, almost four seconds faster than her previous best.
Hong's 800 performance came just a short while after she PR'd in the long jump at 15-9 ¾. Her final total beat last year's score of 2,832.
The 3-5-8 finish put 11 points into SPU's team scoring column. The Falcons, who are slight favorites to win their 10
th team title, were not seeded for any pentathlon points because none of the three women had competed in one this season, though all of them had done some of the individual events in other meets.
Luquin (Portland, Ore.) started her day in fast fashion by clocking 8.93 seconds for second place overall in the 60-meter hurdles. That was .04 better than her old PR and was worth 925 points. She followed that by clearing 5-0 ½ in the high jump – her first time ever over a 5-foot bar indoors or outdoors. (Luquin went 4-10 in last Sunday's UW Indoor Open; her outdoor best is 4-9.)
"The hurdles, I love them," Luquin said. "But that high jump – I've been wanting to clear five feet for so long. At that point I said, 'You know what? No matter what else happens today, you cleared five feet.' "
After throwing 29-7 ¼ in the shot put and going 17-2 in the long jump, Luquin finished with a 2:30.01 run in the 800 meters – 18 seconds ahead of the 2:48.00 she logged in 2012.
All three pentathletes are entered in other individual events throughout the weekend. Luquin finished eighth in the long jump on Friday and qualified for Saturday's 60 hurdles finals. Hommes finished 15th in the long jump, and will triple jump on Saturday. Hong was ninth in the 60 hurdles prelims with a PR time of 9.32.
