Freshman
Ariana Harger earned the highest vault score of the season for a Seattle Pacific gymnast, claiming second-place Friday for the team runner-up in a dual meet with Utah State at The Spectrum.
The NCAA Division II Falcons compiled their second-best score of 192.075. Their only loftier total this year was a 192.650 posted on Jan. 24 at Air Force.
Team scores have fluctuated by the week for the Falcons, who followed solid marks above 191 points in the first, third and now fifth meets with results below 190 in weeks two and four.
Coach
Laurel Tindall would like to figure this out to avoid another drop with an even numbered week approaching.
"We have to figure out how to stop the yo-yo effect. This three-point swing is not what we want to happen," she exclaimed.
"We need to get some consistency. Five weeks down and our lineups need to be solidified."
Division I Utah State amassed 194.725 points to win the team title Friday, powered by the meet's top-two all-around finishers McKinzey Martinez (39.300) and Sarah Landes (39.125).
Sydney ClarkSPU senior
Sydney Clark (Eugene, Ore.) placed third in the all-around with a season-best score of 38.450. That four-event total featured a mark of 9.775 that put Clark in third place on the floor exercise.
"Sydney did a good job and had a really consistent meet," said Tindall. "Her floor routine was great."
Four Falcons established new career-best scores on the vault, leading SPU to its high mark of the year on that apparatus with a combined total of 48.30. Harger (Castro Valley, Calif.) led the way with a 9.825 that was topped only by the 9.85 of Utah's Miranda Kerr. The SPU newcomer surpassed by 0.075 her previous best vault of 9.75.
"Ari did a really good vault. She's been really solid for us on that event," Tindall said.
Harger has been the Falcons top vaulter in four of five meets this season, including each of the last three outings.
"It's great to have somebody like Ari consistently be our top scorer on vault," Tindall said. "It's unusual for us to have a freshman as anchor, but she's been real good there. She has a 10.0 start vault and does a really good job of sticking."
Also registering career-high vault scores for the Falcons were
Paige Blaney (9.775),
Breanna Beltran (9.675) and
Brittany Atchison (9.475).
SPU sophomore
Tracie Villanueva (Kanehoe, Hi.) had her finest balance beam performance and was rewarded with a fourth-place mark of 9.775.
Seniors
Cara Lord (Collegeville, Pa.) and
Shannon Escarra (Fayetteville, Ga.) were the Falcons best competitors on the uneven bars, tying for seventh with matching marks of 9.55.
Martinez garnered top honors on the bars for the Aggies (9.85) and teammate Hayley Sanzotti outscored the beam field (9.875).
The Falcons continue a stretch of three consecutive road meets with a visit to UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. They compete at Washington on Feb. 21 before returning home on Feb. 27 to host Air Force at Brougham Pavilion.
