SEATTLE – This time, the four runners on the Seattle Pacific women's distance medley relay team are hoping it's fast enough.

Perhaps hoping hardest of all is Lynelle Decker – because while she played a key part toward helping that relay take a big stride toward the NCAA Division II indoor track and field nationals, she took an even bigger stride toward getting herself to Alabama.

Decker raced a solid 800-meter leg to help SPU's relay climb into the national top 12, than ran into the national top 10 in the individual 800 meters on Saturday afternoon in the Seattle Pacific Final Qualifier meet.

Falcons junior Decker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS) combined with freshmen Jessica Rawlins and Becca Houk, and fellow junior Anna Patti in the DMR for a time of 11 minutes, 47.33 seconds. It was a drop of more than three seconds from the 11:50.92 that SPU recorded on Feb. 13 in the Husky Classic on the same track at Dempsey Indoor.

That time by a slightly different foursome (Jasmine Johnson ran the 400-meter leg instead of Houk) was immediately good for No. 10 on the D2 qualifying list, with only the top 12 guaranteed a trip to nationals. But by the end of the weekend, the Falcons were down to No. 14 as other teams ran faster in other meets.

That's where they still were – 14th – coming into the Final Qualifier. But Saturday's performance boosted them to No. 11. They won't know for sure until Sunday evening, after all of the action around the country is concluded, if they have made earned tickets to Birmingham for NCAAs on March 13-14.

Decker, however, seems certain to go in the 800 – and for the third year in a row, she did it in dramatic fashion at the Final Qualifier.

Lynelle Decker came up big in
the relay and then in the 800.
About an hour after splitting a 2:13-plus in the distance medley relay – a drop of two seconds from her split two weeks ago – Decker returned to the starting line for the individual 800. She ran the first of the two-plus laps on the 307-meter oval stride for stride with Simon Fraser's Paige Nock, who edged Decker for second place by 13 hundredths of a second in last Saturday's Great Northwest Athletic Conference finals.

Decker then surged ahead, stretched out her lead, and hit the wire in an indoor personal-best time of 2:11.51. That was 35 hundredths faster than the 2:11.86 she ran at last year's NCAAs in North Carolina. It elevated Decker from No. 19 to No. 9 on the national list as of Saturday night. A minimum of 16 make the NCAA field in individual events.

As a freshman in 2013, Decker wasn't even on the NCAA provisional list in the 800 after GNACs, then came back in the Final Qualifier a week later, took almost 2½ seconds off her previous best time, and made the national cut. Last year, she had her provisional mark, but clinched a spot by breaking 2:12 for the first time, clocking 2:11.97 in the Final Qualifier.

SPU was hoping for a third qualifier on Saturday, but fell short in the 4x400 relay. The team of Jahzelle Ambus, Tasia Baldwin, Jalen Tims and Jasmine Johnson clocked 3:49.16. The current 12th-best time is 3:48.24.
