LACEY, Wash. – Earlier this month when Maliea Luquin did her first heptathlon of the season, she was thrilled to get over a 5-foot high jump bar for the first time in her outdoor career.
 
On Monday, the Seattle Pacific junior went just a bit higher, and is on pace for a career-best score and a chance at a top-3 finish in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at Saint Martin's University.

 

Luquin went 5-1 in the high, then later ran a season-best 26.24 seconds in the 200-meter dash, leaving her with 2,777 points through the first four events. That has her tied for third place with Haleigh Lloyd of Alaska Anchorage as Luquin bids to break up a trio of Seawolves who have set their sights on a 1-2-3 finish.
 
The top eight placers earn team points toward their conference meet total. The regular portion of the GNAC Championships are May 8-9 at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
 
Defending champion Karolin Anders is well on her way to a second straight title. She won all four of Monday's events – the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200 – to accumulate 3,071 points. UAA teammate Rosie Smith is second with 2,843, then it's Luquin and Lloyd.

 

Falcons sophomore Maddi Hommes is clinging to seventh place among the 11 competitors with 2,515 points.
 
Everyone returns for the final three events on Tuesday, beginning with the long jump at 10:00 a.m., followed by the javelin and 800 meters.
 
The high jump mark for Luquin (Portland, Ore.) was half an inch higher than what she cleared outdoors at the Sam Adams Combined Events heptathlon on April 3-4 in Santa Barbara, Calif., and indoors at the GNAC Championships in February. Monday's 5-foot-1 was good for a three-way share of fourth place, with Hommes (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden HS) included in that group.
 
Luquin had a pair of third-place finishes – one in the 100 hurdles at 14.81 seconds, and the other in the other in the 200. She was eighth in the shot put at 29-1 ¾.
 
Through the first four events at the Sam Adams heptathlon, Luquin had 2,744 points, on the way to an NCAA provisional-qualifying total of 4,522. That currently ranks 24^th on the Division II list.

 

Hommes had 2015 season bests in the 100 hurdles (16.77 for eighth place), 5-1 in the high jump (part of the tie for fourth). After placing fifth in the shot put at 31-11 12, Hommes ran 27.12 in the 200, matching her fastest of the spring and taking seventh place.

Monday's total has Hommes 80 points ahead of what she had at the midpoint of the Sam Adams hep. She wound up with 4,218 in that one, and her career high is 4,510 in the 2014 California Invitational. Hommes scored 4,391 in last year's GNACs.
 
Jaysen Yoro of Saint Martin's has a sizable lead in the men's decathlon with 3,617 points. That's 228 more than second-place Payton Lewis of Northwest Nazarene. The final five events are on Tuesday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Falcons do not have a decathlon competitor.
