Event-by-event results (HTML) Live results link for Saturday's JD Shotwelll InvitationalSAN FRANCISCO – One national top-10 time would have been noteworthy. Two would have been eye-popping.
But three? All in a span of just more than two hours?
Call it a phenomenally fast Falcon Friday in Frisco.
Anna Patti posted the third-best NCAA Division II time in the 5,000 meters, freshman
Jessica Rawlins ran the nation's fourth-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time of the spring, and
Lynelle Decker maintained her No. 4 ranking in the 800 meters as Seattle Pacific runners shone as bright as the Bay Area sun in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
Falcons junior Patti (Renton, Wash. / Lindbergh HS) finished second in the 5K, coming across the Cox Stadium finish line in 16 minutes, 41.56 seconds. As of Friday evening, with lots more action still to come across the nation this weekend, Patti ranks No. 3 on the D2 list.
Rawlins (Mill Creek, Wash. / Henry M. Jackson HS) clocked 10:52.79 in the steeplechase, climbing from nowhere all the way up to No. 4 in the country.
Decker, who already was No. 4 in the 800 coming off of a solid run at last week's Club Northwest Spring Break Open in West Seattle, ran even faster. She stopped the watch in 2:10.64, barely getting out-leaned at the line by Jessica Pahkala of Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Alaska Anchorage (2:10.59). Pahkala's time is No. 3 nationally; Decker is right behind in No. 4.
All three of those times were NCAA provisional qualifiers and GNAC automatic qualifiers.
Anna PattiPatti had never broken 17 minutes previously. On Friday, not only did she do that with 18-plus seconds to spare, she was nearly 38 seconds faster than her old outdoor PR of 17:19.10, set last April 18 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
"I wasn't expecting it, but I was definitely hoping for it right now," Patti said. "There were over 30 girls in that heat, and the first mile was hit-and-miss. But once I found my rhythm, I just tried to move up and move up.
"It was so crowded, but I think it worked to my advantage," Patti added. "It wasn't ideal at the start because there were so many bodies. But once it started stretching out, there were people for me to chase."
Patti's time easily would have made last year's NCAA cut (16:57.15) and actually would have given her ninth place on race night. In two weeks, she is scheduled to run in the 10,000 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
Jessica RawlinsRawlins had never run a steeplechase until March 21 at the Rose City Preview in Gresham, Ore. That one was just a 2,000-meter event, but her time of 7 minutes, 11.72 seconds was the second-fastest in GNAC history.
On Friday, she got her first crack at a full-length 3K steeple. Her time ranks No. 2 in Seattle Pacific history, trailing only the school record of 10:45.54 set by Suzie Strickler in 2008. Rawlins' 10:52.79 would have gotten her into last year's nationals as the No. 19 seed.
"I wanted to go sub-11, or at least be close to that – I wanted to put myself somewhere on the list," Rawlins said. "I was nervous, because I hadn't run 3K before. But I didn't feel too blindsided by it. I thought I was going slower than I was, but I wasn't paying attention to my overall time because I was just focused on getting over the barriers."
Lynelle DeckerDecker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS), who ran 2:11.64 last week to make NCAA provisional, was a full second faster than that on Friday, and was six-hundredths of a second away from her career best of 2:10.58 – set on this same San Francisco oval last April 4, a time that easily got her into the 2014 nationals.
The Falcons got personal-best performances from freshman
Mary Charleson (Mill Creek, Wash. / Henry M. Jackson HS) and sophomore
Hannah Calvert (Enumclaw, Wash. / Enumclaw HS) in the 1,500. Charleson dropped three-plus seconds to 4:47.27; Calvert shaved off more than six seconds to 4:48.52.
Sophomore
Sarah Macdonald joined the PR parade with a 17:25.16 in the 5,000, eight seconds better than her old mark of 17:33.17.
