Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – On a day of fateful firsts for the Falcons, the last goal saved the day.
Laura Moore scored twice, including a golden goal with 1:33 left in the final overtime Saturday to give 23rd-ranked Seattle Pacific a 3-2 non-conference women's soccer victory over Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Stadium.
The Falcons (4-0-0) remained undefeated by sweeping their two-game Bay Area road trip. They won 1-0 at Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday.
Moore (Kentwood HS) ended Saturday's game at 108:27 with a 20-yard blast that beat the goalkeeper to the upper left of the East Bay goal. She tied for the team lead with her third goal of the season.
Arby Busey, SPU's interim head coach, observed that Moore capitalized on a repeated gap in the Pioneers defense.
"Laura had a couple opportunities in the second half that were the exact same as she got in overtime. She saw something there. One of them in the second half deflected, and fell a little bit short into the goalkeeper's hands.
"The one in overtime, she saw the same opening and was able to loop one over her head into the side netting. It was definitely something that she had seen earlier and found again late in overtime and took advantage of it."
SPU appeared in control with a 2-1 lead before East Bay equalized with 3:49 left in regulation on a penalty kick by Megan Ravenscroft. The kick was awarded after SPU goalkeeper
Molly Stinson was whistled for a foul after colliding with a Pioneers player while chasing a loose ball.
The Pioneers' second score forced the Falcons first overtime this season.
Stinson (Woodinville HS) stopped two shots to register her fourth win of the season. Her second save denied East Bay's final attempt, a shot by Nicole Stamper with 3:11 left in the second overtime.
SPU's sophomore goalkeeper has allowed just one goal from the run of play this season.
Angela Valentine was credited with four saves for the Pioneers (1-4), who were outshot 15-7.
The hosts got on the scoreboard first with a goal 6:50 into the contest off a corner kick. Janelle Herrera crossed a ball to the far post where Corryn Barney headed it back to the near post for a finish by Sara Silva.
That was the first goal surrendered this season by the Falcons and it created their first deficit. They quickly rallied to tie the score less than eight minutes later and claimed the lead midway through the first half.
"Having not been scored on this season I wasn't surprised by their response, but we wondered as a coaching staff how they would do after giving up an early goal," Busey said. "And their response was massive."
Isabel FarrellSenior
Isabel Farrell (Interlake HS) assisted on the first two SPU goals.
She set up the tying tally on a pass over the top of the East Bay defense.
Hannah Huesers (Lake Stevens HS) scored on a left-footer from 12 yards out at 14:33.
That was the second score in as many games for the junior forward, who led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 15 goals in 2014. She is tied for team honors with three goals in four games this year.
The Falcons first go-ahead goal came off the foot of the game's eventual hero. Farrell served a low cross from the left side that Moore first-timed into the goal from eight-yards out at 27:56.
"It was good to get the first goal to settle nerves a little and the second one was even better to put us in the ascendency for the latter part of the first half and the second half," said Busey.
The SPU women start GNAC play at home next weekend, hosting Simon Fraser on Saturday, Sept. 19. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
"We're excited to get going in the conference. The non-conference schedule was successful and we're right where we want to be coming into conference play," Busey said.
"We know that conference play is a whole different animal. We're playing teams that are familiar with us and teams that we are a bit more familiar with, and that is something we're excited about."
