Box Score

NAMPA, Idaho – Sarah Jenkins scored from 30-yards out in the 58th minute Thursday, lifting Northwest Nazarene to a 1-0 upset of 11th-ranked Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at NNU Soccer Field.

The Falcons (4-1-1) tasted defeat for the first time while falling to 0-1-1 in league play.

SPU compiled an 18-5 shot advantage and 12 of those attempts were directly on frame.

NNU goalkeeper Daniele Ortiz repelled 11 of those shots, including back-to-back deflections of shots by Maddy Booster (Bend, Ore.) one minute into the second half after a corner kick from Isabel Farrell. The rebound then fell to SPU's Laura Moore, who had her shot blocked off the goal line by defender McCrea Nirider while Ortiz was still on the ground after her successive saves.

"We had a couple bites at the apple," SPU interim coach Arby Busey described. "We were in there kicking and kicking and kicking, and they just put themselves in the right spot to get in the way and keep it out of their net."

The Crusaders (4-3-0) improved to 1-1-0 in GNAC games after halting a 27-game losing streak by defeating SPU for the first time since their inaugural meeting in 2001. They trail in the all-time series by a 27-2 count.

NNU got on the board 12 minutes into the second half on Jenkins' first goal of the season. She received a pass from Ashley Cook-Cox and lofted a shot from12 yards outside the box. The ball traveled just over the reach of Falcons goalkeeper Molly Stinson before tucking under the crossbar.

"It was from a long ways away," said Busey. "It just dipped into the far post top corner. Credit to her because it was a great finish."

Stinson (Woodinville HS) made four saves and gave up a goal for only the third time this season. The sophomore has four shutouts in 2015.

The first half was scoreless despite an 8-2 shot margin for the visitors. Three of SPU's chances came within a two-minute span, beginning in the ninth minute. Farrell (Interlake HS) fired a shot followed by two from Moore (Kentwood HS), but the trio of tries was denied by Ortiz. She was credited with five saves during the opening 45 minutes.

The Crusaders lone first-half shot on goal came in the sixth minute, an attempt by Lexi Fesenbek that was stopped by Stinson.

"We had a group today that wasn't as motivated as our opponent and they took advantage of that," said Busey, who bemoaned his team's lack of scoring. "You have to put the ball in the net to win games and we've been struggling to do that. We have to find a way to tune that up so that we're more proficient in the opportunities that we get.

"The shot count was 18-5. We should have had something for our efforts there. We have to take better advantage of those opportunities. When it's that lopsided, we should have more to show for it."

The SPU women are on the road again Saturday to visit Saint Martin's. Kick-off is 3:15 p.m. at SMU Soccer Field in Lacey, Wash. The Falcons next home game is Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. versus fifth-ranked Western Washington.
