Maria Hundley shared first place honors on the vault and
Ariana Harger placed second in the all-around Friday for Seattle Pacific, which compiled a third-place team score of 189.900 at the UC Davis tri meet in The Pavilion.
A two-time vault All-American, Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) received a score of 9.80 to tie for the title on that apparatus with Mary Frances Bir of Boise State.
"Maria had a really good vault with a 10.0 start value from both judges," Coach
Laurel Tindall said of her senior standout. "She does that vault pretty well."
Ariana HargerCompeting in all four events as a Falcon for just the second time, Harger (Castro Valley, Calif.) compiled a runner-up total of 37.90. She posted scores of 9.75 on vault, 9.325 on the uneven bars, 9.05 on the balance beam and 9.775 on the floor exercise that tied for sixth place in that event.
"Ari's vault was a lot better than last week," Tindall described. "She stuck her vault and it really looked better than Maria's. She landed totally straight up-and-down."
Boise's Krystine Jacobsen was the all-around winner with a mark of 39.125 that included a first-place bars score of 9.875. She led the Broncos to 195.700 points and the team championship.
Sandra Collantes of BSU was the leading floor performer with the highest score on any event, 9.90.
Host UC Davis had a second-place score of 194.325 led by the 9.85, first-place performance of Stephanie Stamates on the beam.
A slow start on the bars, with a mark of 45.925, prevented the Falcons from accumulating a loftier team total. But they recovered to post progressively higher scores after every rotation to get within one-tenth of the 190-point plateau.
"It was a tough meet for us. We didn't meet our goal of getting a 190. Even though we were close, that wasn't really where we should have been," Tindall said.
The score was an improvement of 1.15 points from the 188.750 recorded in last week's season opener at Air Force.
SPU registered a 47.875 on the balance beam Friday and 47.900 on the floor exercise before concluding the competition with a 48.200 on the vault during the fourth rotation.
Carly KanoFreshman
Carly Kano (Temple City, Calif.) made her Falcons debut and topped the team with a bars score of 9.475 that placed her 12th overall.
"Our best bars score was from a person in her first college meet who didn't travel last week," said Tindall. "When you come into a gym on the road there can be a little bit of a deer-in-the-headlights approach. We thought that might really affect Carly and she ends up hitting a routine."
For the second straight week junior
Kristi Hayashida (Mililani, Hawaii) was SPU's best vaulter. She tied for sixth with a season-best 9.775.
The SPU gymnasts host their 2016 home opener on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. They have a dual meet against Sacramento State.
"It's definitely really helpful that we will be at home next week and we can also give some other kids an opportunity to try them out," Tindall said.
