Maria Hundley tied for top honors on both the vault and uneven bars Friday, with matching scores of 9.80, and her Seattle Pacific teammates collected four additional medals in a third-place team finish at the San Jose State quad meet in the Events Center.
The NCAA Division II Falcons posted their second-highest team score of the season, but the tally of 189.875 fell just shy of their first 190-point effort of the year.
Coach
Laurel Tindall expressed that the 190-point figure is not their goal. Her team needs to push its average a couple points higher than that to secure one of eight invitations to the USAG Collegiate Championships that take place April 8-10 in St Charles, Missouri.
"We're a better team than that. It doesn't matter if we would have gotten a 190, because that's not what we want to aspire to.
"We've got seven meets left and conference to get to a 192-, 193-average. We've got to be pumping out some 192s and 193s in the next seven meets."
The host Spartans, Division I competitors, finished atop the team standings with 192.825 points followed by Texas Woman's University with 191.275. William & Mary had a fourth-place total of 187.650.
Lauren GloverSPU junior
Lauren Glover (Fort Collins, Colo.) matched her season-best floor exercise routine with a 9.725 that placed her second. San Jose's Erica Matos won the floor with a 9.80.
"She really had a great routine tonight and great tumbling," Tindall described. "It was better tumbling than I've seen from Lauren on both of her double-backs."
Sophomore
Ariana Harger compiled a four-event total of 37.650 points to place third in that competition. Included in that total was a third-place score of 9.675 on the floor.
The Spartans' Kaitlin Won was the best all-arounder at 38.800 and Schyler Jones of TWU was a close second at 38.775. Jones received a score of 9.850 to win the beam.
Kristi Hayashida (Mililani, Hawaii) has been SPU's top beam performer in every meet this season. She did it again Friday with a mark of 9.75 that put her in a third-place tie.
Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) tied for first on the vault with Matos. She was involved in a three-way deadlock on the bars along with Aileen Malecki of William & Mary and TWU's Katie Simpson.
SPU got off to a solid start on the bars, moving into second place after the first rotation. Four Falcons registered season-high marks for that apparatus en route to a combined score of 47.825 that was the team's best on bars in 2016.
Breanna BeltranAlong with Hundley's 9.80,
Breanna Beltran received a 9.675,
Tracie Villanueva a 9.625 and
Carly Kano a 9.40.
"We started out on bars and we did great," said Tindall. "We had some momentum going."
A few falls forced the Falcons to count balance beam scores of 9.00 and 9.05 in the second rotation as they fell to third place at the midway point. Their team total of 46.925 included the 9.75 from Hayashida and a season-high 9.675 from Hundley.
Hayashida was the bronze medalist on the beam at the 2015 USAG Championships and teammate Hundley won the last two national titles.
"Maria had her best meet of the season tonight," Tindall said. "She did a great bar routine and a great vault, with a really good landing. And this is the first meet she's hit beam, so that was definitely a plus."
SPU stayed in third place through three rotations after a combined total of 47.275 on the floor. That figure featured Glover's 9.725 and Harger's 9.675.
The Falcons finished the meet on the vault and amassed their highest team score of the night. Their 48.050 included season-high tying marks form Hundley (9.80) and Glover (9.70) along with a 9.45 from
Carly Kano (Temple City, Calif.) in her collegiate vault debut.
The SPU women have another road meet next week. They are at Sacramento State for a dual meet on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Hornet's Nest.
The Falcons' next home action is Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. when UC Davis visits Brougham Pavilion for a dual meet.
