SEATTLE –
Hannah Huesers scored less than four minutes into play Saturday to move into a tie for the No. 2 spot among the school's all-time scorers with her 42nd career goal for Seattle Pacific, which defeated Simon Fraser 3-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
Brooke Lancaster contributed a goal and assist for the Falcons (8-2-3), who improved to 5-1-2 in league play. They have lost just once in their last 10 outings.
"We got off to a good start and kind of built from there," SPU coach
Arby Busey said of Saturday's result, which followed a 1-0 win at Montana State Billings two days before. "It was something that we talked about because I didn't think that we started very well on Thursday and it was something we focused on and really talked about.
"The girls did a great job of coming out today with some intensity and getting a goal early to settle things down for us. That really put us in a good place."
The game began at 2 p.m., two hours earlier than previously scheduled due to concerns about high winds and severe weather projected for the Puget Sound area.
The Falcons responded to the early start with a quick goal. The opening score came 3-minutes, 42-seconds after kickoff on a breakaway that was initiated by a low through pass form
Maddie Krauss. Huesers (Lake Stevens HS) slipped a 10-yard shot under the diving goalkeeper that snuck inside the right post. That was her team-leading seventh score of the season.
"She's a special person. Hannah did a great job today of being clinical in that moment when we needed her," said Busey. "It wasn't a shot that she smashed. She looked up and rolled it under the goalkeeper. Hannah really is somebody that we can lean on and rely on to get us what we need in the moments that we need it. She showed up big-time today in that first five minutes for us."
Hannah Huesers
The senior striker is tied for second in career goals with Shannon Lovejoy (2002-05). Huesers needs seven more tallies to equal the school record held by Sarah Martinez, who amassed 49 goals from 2004-07.
SPU added a second goal at 19:55 with passes from
Kaytlin Willis and
Simone Herzberg contributing to the build-up. Lancaster (Sumner HS) finished with a 12-yard shot from the left side, depositing it into the right inside-netting for her first goal of the season.
The Falcons were extremely efficient, netting three goals on just five shots.
The third score came off the foot of
Julia DeVere on a beautiful shot from the top of the box into the right side of the goal. A through pass from Lancaster put her behind the defense and DeVere (Squalicum HS) flipped a shot over the onrushing goalkeeper for the first goal of her career.
Senior goalkeeper
Molly Stinson preserved the shutout with seven saves. She has four clean sheets and combined with the SPU backup for two others. Stinson (Woodinville HS) has blanked 13 opponents during 38 career starts.
The Falcons defense has not yielded more than one goal to a league opponent while compiling four shutouts and a 0.47 goals against average in GNAC games.
Molly Stinson
"One of the big things about the success of our defense is that Molly is in goal. She is such a good, calming influence for the players in front of her," Busey described. "The way she leads, the way she talks allows that job to be a little bit easier for guys coming and going. Again we had to re-shuffle today.
"Molly's the glue that keeps that thing going. That's not to take any credit away from the players in front of her that are responding to the information that they're getting and doing a really good job of applying the communication that she's providing to them."
The visitor's best offensive opportunity came in the 28th minute when leading scorer Emma Pringle broke free into the left side of the box. Her low drive was deflected by Stinson with a kick save.
In the 88th minute a ball was loose in the Falcons box and bounding goalward before defender
Brooke Pingrey cleared it off the line.
The Clan (6-5-1) had their GNAC record drop to 4-4-0 despite a 19-5 shot advantage. Goalkeeper Priya Sandhu played all 90 minutes, but was not credited with a save.
The Falcons remain in Seattle to complete their home schedule with two games next week at Interbay Stadium. They host top-ranked Western Washington on Thursday at 7 p.m. before Montana State Billings visits on Saturday at 1 p.m.
"They've built that program up and certainly are a worthy number one," Busey said of the league-leading Vikings. "It's two really good teams that are very familiar with each other and I expect it to be an entertaining, competitive game as it always is with them.
"We have a tremendous amount of respect for who they are and how they go about things. We know we'll have to be at our best to hope to get a result come Thursday night."
