BILLINGS, Mont. – Unable to muster much offense and blanked for the second straight outing, Seattle Pacific succumbed to Montana State Billings, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at Yellowjacket Field.
Niklas Shregel made the difference, scoring the game's only goal early in the second half and the Falcons could not mount a response, finishing with a season-low five shots.
Halfway through a string of four consecutive road games SPU (4-5-5/2-3-4 GNAC) has yet to score after falling 1-0 in overtime at Northwest Nazarene on Thursday. The Falcons have yet to win away (0-4-2) this season.
Montana State Billings (8-4-3/4-2-3 GNAC) won for the third time in four games and is now 7-2-0 at home. The 'Jackets had drawn 1-1 at Interbay last month.
Seattle Pacific's midfield was depleted. Two starters,
Jess Cayetano and
Jordan Kollars, were out. Cayetano picked up a red card at NNU and Kollars was injured in that game.
Although the aggressor for much of the bright, mild day, the Yellowjackets could not get past SPU keeper
Cody Lang until the 49th minute. Shregel, a blonde, 6-foot-4 German striker, spun on his marker at the top of the box and cracked a low drive to low right corner. It was only his second goal of the season.
"We made one mistake today and they made us pay," said SPU coach
Mark Collings. "Our defender tried to get in front of a pass, but didn't quite get there. Their forward got it, spun and hit a great shot. Cody had no chance to stop it."
Cody Lang
Billings had scored 10 times in its previous three games, but Lang made seven stops on their 19 attempts. He kept SPU within striking distance midway through the second half, leaping to push Flavio Colasanti's drive over the bar. Colasanti and Ricardo Paomino each were credited with five shots.
The Falcons struggled to maintain possession early as the Yellowjackets kept ball in the attacking half and produced six shots and forced four corners in the first 25 minutes. Lang dived to his left to turn a long-distance effort from J.D. Hauenstein around the post in the 11th minute.
Stephen MacDonald came off the bench in the 27th minute to provide the visitors some spark. MacDonald, nearly converted a cross from
Gabe Kellum in the 36th minute. He then fired a low free kick from 25 yards that required a near-post save from Billings keeper Joe Scott shortly before halftime. SPU did not levy another shot until the final 12 minutes.
Already with its most losses since going 10-6-2 in 2010, Seattle Pacific visits Portland's Concordia on Thursday night.
