SEATTLE –
Courtney Hollander pumped in 21 points on Saturday afternoon, and
Rachel Shim came off the bench to add 10 as Seattle Pacific opened the women's basketball season with a 53-45 victory at Seattle University in an exhibition game.
Junior forward Hollander (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden Christian HS) drained 8 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 5 from behind the 3-point line. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Senior guard Shim (Sammamish, Wash. / Skyline HS) hit all three of her field goals from downtown, also collecting two rebounds and coming up with two steals.
Although the Falcons shot just 38 percent overall from the floor (18 of 47), they were sharp from behind the arc, hitting 9 of 20 (45 percent).
With Hollander's seven leading the way, SPU won the boards, 37-33. Sophomore guard
Jaylee Albert (Hamilton, Mont.) had six. She and senior guard
Stacey Lukasiewicz (Centennial, Colo.) led the way with three assists apiece, and Lukasiewicz also had three steals.
Seattle Pacific went on a 10-0 run during a four-minute span of the first quarter to take a 12-3 lead and stayed in front the rest of the way. The Falcons had a 22-15 lead at halftime and stretched it to 10 by the end of the third quarter at 42-32. It stayed in double digits for most of the fourth. Seattle U twice got as close as six, the last time at 49-43 with 1:25 to play.
Kaylee Best led the Redhawks with 12 points.
The last time SPU played an NCAA Division I opponent in an exhibition was in 2012 when they dropped an 80-55 decision at Oregon State.
The Falcons play their final exhibition game next Saturday, hosting George Fox of Newberg, Ore., at 7:00 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion. That will be preceded by a men's exhibition game against Lewis & Clark College at 4:30 p.m.
