SEATTLE – This early in the season, the Seattle Pacific Falcons rely on their defense to get the job done while the offense finds its rhythm.
Mission accomplished – at least for the first two games.
Courtney Hollander scored 16 points on Saturday night, and the Falcons limited Humboldt State to just 29 percent shooting from the field in a 67-36 victory that polished off a sweep of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic in Brougham Pavilion.
SPU (2-0) got at least two points from 11 players and at least one rebound from 12 of them in beating the Lumberjacks (0-2) for the 28th game in a row.
This is the 11th time in the 12-year history of the Sodexo that the Falcons have won both games. On Friday, they rolled past Fresno Pacific, 90-39.
"I thought we played great defense," head coach
Julie Heisey said. "It's really hard to play defense when you're not always scoring. I was proud of our kids for staying in the moment. I thought our defensive intensity stayed really strong even though our offensive effort wasn't as good as we're capable of."
In the two games, SPU allowed 75 total points. Fresno and Humboldt combined to shoot just 26.9 percent (31 of 115).
"Defensively, we followed the scout and talked really well," Hollander said "Our defense overall this weekend was really great."
Junior forward Hollander (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden Christian HS) had 26 points and 13 rebounds in her two games, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. Joining her on that squad was SPU teammate
Jordan McPhee. The junior guard had eight points and five rebounds on Saturday, finishing with 18 points and nine boards for the weekend.
Hollander hit 6 of 10 from the floor on Saturday, including 2 of 3 from behind the 3-point arc. She also handed out three assists and came up with two steals during her 27 minutes.
BIG BURSTS SEAL THE DEAL
Up just 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, Seattle Pacific put 15 straight points on the board during the second to break the game open. Humboldt State (0-2) missed its first eight shots of the quarter, finally scoring with 2:06 left on a lay-in by Teylor McMiller.
The Falcons were up 32-16 at halftime, and the margin never got any closer than that during the final two quarters.
Seattle Pacific hit just 4 of 15 from the field during the first quarter, but steadily got better as the game went along, and finished at 44.4 percent (24 of 54). That included 50 percent shooting (12 of 24) during the second half. Humboldt State was limited to 29.4 percent from the floor (15 of 51).
"Obviously, there are always things we can get better at," Heisey said. "Games make practice more meaningful. But we (won) two in-region games, everybody got to play, and we learned a lot."
Erica Pagano
Junior forward
Erica Pagano, who led SPU on Friday with 12 points, went for another nine on Saturday. Sophomore center
Carly Rataushk (Kirkland, Wash. / Lake Washington HS) added eight points to match her career high that she had set just 24 hours earlier. She hit 4 of 5 from the field.
SPU heads to Bellingham next weekend for the West Region Crossover at Whatcom Community College. The Falcons take on long-time West Region rival UC San Diego on Friday, Nov. 18, at 5:00 p.m., then faces Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 5.
"We can't let this make us lazy," McPhee said. "We have to keep working. They're really good teams, so we have to be ready, and we have to address each practice with the mindset of winning."
