VIDEO: Senior Night Ceremony
SEATTLE –
Jess Cayetano scored two late goals Saturday night for Seattle Pacific, but it wasn't enough to overcome the hat trick by Adam Jones that led third-ranked Simon Fraser to a 4-2 win in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
The Falcons completed the season with a 6-6-5 record and were 4-4-4 in league play.
"You have to give it to Simon Fraser, they played well," said
Mark Collings, who completed his ninth season at SPU. "That's why they're going to the tournament and our season's over."
After scoring in the 31st minute to give the Clan a 1-0 halftime lead, Jones added tallies in the 47th and 68th minutes. Teammate Freddie Gard, who assisted on Jones' second score, netted the team's third goal, at 65:19.
Cayetano (Portland, Ore.) cut the 4-0 deficit in half with a pair of 85th-minute goals 48 second apart. The Falcons junior midfielder notched his third and fourth scores of the season.
"Jess had a really tremendous year and it was good to see him get a couple goals," said Collings. "He's one of the guys who had to do a lot of heavy lifting. Because of injuries he was forced to move around and play some different roles."
Goalkeeper
Cody Lang (Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark HS) recorded five saves for SPU, which was outshot by a 16-5 margin. All five Falcons shots came during the final 16 minutes, the first of them off the foot of
Gabe Kellum at 74:45.
Simon Fraser (14-1-2) improved to 9-1-2 in GNAC games and won its second straight conference championship. Goalkeeper Brandon Watson made just one save.
"We lost to a better team tonight. They executed their game plan better than we did," Collings said. "It was a pretty even game in the first half. Even though we didn't put very much pressure on their goal, other than the goal they didn't put much pressure on ours either.
"The early goal in the second half really killed us. We made a couple changes and didn't really get to put them into play before they got the second one. I was proud of us getting a couple goals and making it interesting at least."
The first goal by Jones, at 30:09, came on a 25-yard blast from the center to the left side of the goal, converting a low pass from Brendan Shaw on the left flank.
Jones struck again 1:05 after halftime on a rebound of a blocked shot attempt by Gard.
Gard got into the scoring act two minutes later, putting the Clan up 3-0. He found a Robert Hyams corner kick at the edge of the 6-yard box and headed it into the upper left corner.
Jones completed the hat trick at 67:26, slipping a low shot inside the left post from 16 yards out off a pass from Hyams.
Cayetano's lightning strikes started with six minutes left to play. At 84:03 he received a quick, short cross from
Luke Postma on the right side and redirected it into the Clan goal from four yards out.
At 84:51 Cayetano again did damage from the goalmouth. He was the first player to a loose ball and slide to push it into the goal from three yards. That was the third multi-goal game of the season for a Falcon, the first since Sept. 10 when
Stephen MacDonald posted a hat trick.
The 2016 SPU senior class
Saturday's game marked the final home playing appearance for six SPU student-athletes and all of them were in the starting lineup. The seniors honored during a pregame ceremony were
Jeffrey Collings,
Keenan dePinna,
Davis Karaica,
Jordan Kollars,
Cody Lang and
Stephen MacDonald.
That senior class compiled a 48-13-14 record in four seasons, including an impressive 26-4-9 mark at Interbay Stadium.
The outgoing seniors typify the caliber of student-athlete the program wants to produce, according to Coach Collings.
"For the young guys that are still in the program, if they're looking for what being a Falcon means those six guys really exemplify it. They do it in different ways. Some of them are quiet, some of them are a little bit more outspoken. Some of the have God-given talent and others do it with their work ethic. As a whole they are everything I want our players to be. They are all very good students.
"I'm sad to see them go, but at the same time I'm happy for the experience that they had and the impact they had on our program and university. I'm really excited to see what they do as individuals moving forward because each of them have some great opportunities ahead of them and it's going to fun to watch."
