• VIDEO: Ariana HargerSEATTLE – The Falcons capped the gymnastics regular-season with their loftiest score and are peaking at the right time heading into the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships.
Maria Hundley tied for second on the vault and
Ariana Harger finished fourth with her best all-around total, helping Seattle Pacific to a season-high score of 193.950 on Saturday in a third-place finish at the University of Washington's Edmundson Pavilion.
"We competed better than we normally do at the UW," Coach
Laurel Tindall said of her team's annual crosstown trip. "We always are comfortable at the UW, but maybe with the comfort sometimes we make errors when we are here.
"Tonight we didn't count a fall, something we've done in maybe one other meet."
The Falcons surpassed by .05 their previous high mark of 193.900 established on Feb. 19 at Northern Illinois. This is their fifth time above the 193-point plateau this season, a feat they accomplished in each of their last three meets.
Tindall still has her sights set on reaching the 194-point level for the first time this season.
"That 194 seems to keep eluding us. We've been within a tenth, and tonight we were within a half-tenth. Going into bars in the final rotation it was totally doable, but didn't quite get there. Obviously when you are a half-tenth off, any number of things could have gone just a little better."
The host Huskies finished atop the team standings with 196.650 points and Denver was a close second at 193.325. Both of those are NCAA Division II members while SPU is a Division II competitor.
Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) received a score of 9.825 on the vault to fuel the Falcons season-best team total of 48.625 on that apparatus. That was one-tenth shy of the school record of 48.725.
The SPU senior tied for second with UW's Alexandra Yacalis and Julia Ross of Denver. The Huskies lone senior, Allison Northey, had the top vault mark of 9.90.
Northey tallied a first-place total of 39.500 all-around points. Denver's Nina McGee was second (39.275) and UW's Joslyn goings third (39.225).
Ariana HargerHarger's 38.875 points formed her career-best four-event total, an improvement of .025 from her previous high of 38.85. She scored 9.80 on vault, 9.55 on the uneven bars, 9.825 on the balance beam and 9.725 on the floor exercise.
"Ari was really good tonight," Tindall said. "Bars is still her weak event, but she's getting every tenth out of it that she can. Obviously sticking her dismount helps.
"We're just trying to get high 9.7s or 9.8s for her in the other events and then just get a nice clean routine out of bars."
Hundley had a fifth-place score of 38.725 in the all-around, including a 9.825 that tied her for fourth on the beam. She scored 9.725 on the floor and 9.35 on the bars despite a fall.
Kaitlyn Duranczyk topped the bars field with a 9.90 and UW teammate Goings was the leading beam scorer at 9.875.
Denver's McGee prevented a Huskies sweep of the individual events as she earned the highest floor score of 9.925.
The Falcons stellar vault total included a season-high score of 9.75 from
Lauren Glover. Harger (9.80) and
Breanna Beltran (9.675) equaled their 2016 vault bests.
The successful regular-season finale has the team's hopes high heading into the championship portion of the campaign.
"We do a pretty good job of peaking at the end of the season," said Tindall, whose Falcons achieved their top four scores in the last five meets.
"Overall this was a good, solid meet. We have just some little things that we need to correct for next week to be in the mix."
The SPU gymnasts travel to Sacramento, Calif. for their conference championships. The six-team MPSF meet is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 19 at Sacramento State.
