SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Seattle Pacific senior
Maria Hundley took advantage of her opportunity to step up to Division I competition and placed ninth in the all-around on Saturday night at the NCAA West Regionals in the Huntsman Center.
She compiled a four-event total of 39.025 points as an at-large entry in the six-team regional meet. Hundley was the only Division II gymnast in the competition. Her highest individual event finish was a tie for 17th place with a score of 9.775 on the uneven bars.
Hundley received matching 9.775 scores to tie for 19th on the vault and 20th on the balance beam and her floor exercise score of 9.700 placed her 37th overall.
She is the first Falcon to qualify as an all-arounder at the Division I regionals in nine years, since 2007 when Debra Huss and Sarah Jean Sullivan competed in all four events. Sullivan (now Marshall) is an assistant coach with the current SPU squad.
Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) was invited to compete at the Division I regional based on lofty qualifying scores compiled during the regular season. Saturday marked her second time participating regional, the first as an all-arounder. She competed on the vault, bars and beam at the 2014 meet and her best result was a 10th-place tie on the beam.
Host Utah won Saturday's team competition with 197.125 points, UCLA was second (196.375) and Washington third (195.825). Illinois finished fourth (195.350) followed by Utah State (195.025) and Southern Utah (194.950).
Hundley will be in action next week when the Seattle Pacific women compete at the eight-team USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships. The three-day national championship meet runs from April 8-10 in St. Charles, Mo.
The team semifinals will be conducted in two sessions, taking place on Friday, April 8 in Hyland Arena on the Lindenwood University campus. Fourth-seeded SPU will participate in the first session at noon Pacific Time (2 p.m. Central) and open the meet on the vault. Also in the opening group will be top seed Bridgeport, No. 5 Cornell and No. 8 Air Force.
Hundley is the defending national champion on the bars and beam. Her career total of five national titles, including three in 2014, are a school record.
