SEATTLE – The stat sheet said Seattle Pacific dominated the game. The scoreboard told a different story.

Hannah Huesers scored in the first half Saturday, but that was the lone goal for the SPU women who surrendered a second-half score in a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Metro State in a non-conference soccer game at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (2-1-1) settled for a draw despite being on the high end of a 28-9 shot disparity.

Huesers put the SPU up 1-0 at 31:58 after a pair of nice passes. Simone Herzberg sent a feed in the left side of the box to Brooke Lancaster slid to deliver a low ball across the goalmouth that Huesers tapped in from two yards out for her second goal of the season.

Second-year head coach Arby Busey described the scoring sequence as textbook SPU soccer.

"A lot of quick tempo, one-two passing. The ball stayed on the ground and that's when we're at our best, when we're able to keep it on the ground, pass to feet and move.

"We had some good, dynamic movement off the ball in that sequence and we got two, three guys in and around goal to be able to have a quality chance in terms of our ability to finish it. It was a very easy finish for Hannah."

It was arguably the simplest score in the career of the senior forward who has 37 goals to her credit in 59 outings. Huesers (Lake Stevens HS) ranks fourth among the school's career scoring leaders, 12 shy of the standard of 49 established by Sarah Martinez (2004-07).

SPU nearly added a second goal as time expired in the first half. Julia DeVere (Bellingham, Wash./Squalicam HS) fired a low shot, but Metro goalkeeper Erica Torres dove to her left to snag the ball as the whistle blew.

"That was a great chance. There were several of them that just slipped through our fingers, but didn't slip through hers," Busey said. "Their goalkeeper was pretty good on the night. She did everything she was asked to do in terms of holding onto some of the shots that we hit at her."

Torres amassed 13 saves against a 28-shot barrage with half of the attempts heading directly on goal. Her SPU counterpart, Molly Stinson, was called upon for one save.

At halftime the Falcons owned an 11-2 shot advantage and a 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners (1-1-2) drew even at 64:24 with a goal against the run of play. Nana Gomez served a cross from the left flank that was directed high into the SPU net from seven yards out by Elise Boisnard.

SPU wasted a prime chance for the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute after DeVere was fouled in the box by a defender. The subsequent penalty kick by Brooke Pingrey (Snohomish HS) was saved at the center of the goal by Torres.

"Sometimes in games like this where the goalkeeper is so revved up and has been making a lot of saves, she's ready and able in those situations to come up with a big save," Busey explained. "Certainly that created a little momentum for them and took a little away from us."

The Falcons have little time to rest as they play at home again on Monday at noon. They entertain Cal State East Bay at Interbay Stadium to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule.

"Sometimes after a game like this a quick turnaround is a good thing," Busey concluded. "It allows you to kind of move on and have another opportunity because we are all a little frustrated tonight in terms of not getting more goals on the board with the opportunities and shots that we created.

"Maybe Monday comes around and allows us to kind of cope with some of that frustration and get another chance to do what we did today, but maybe put more into the back of the net."
