BURNABY, B.C. – Mamadi Camara was on both ends of Simon Fraser's first two goals and Adam Jones struck twice as the 6th-ranked Clan extended its winning streak to 12 games by beating Seattle Pacific 3-1 in the GNAC opener for both teams at Terry Fox Field on Thursday night.
Gabe Kellum's second-half penalty kick briefly pulled SPU (2-3-1) within a goal before Jones notched his second.
Camara, a powerful 6-foot-3 sophomore, scored in his third straight match and also helped set-up the game's first goal. Simon Fraser remains perfect (6-0-0) on the season and is unbeaten in 11 at home since a Falcons win in 2014.
After winning two in a row the SPU men have now dropped back-to-back games – both to nationally-ranked sides – for the first time since late 2013. They lost 2-1 to No. 18 Fort Hays State on Saturday in Seattle.
Simon Fraser asserted itself from the outset but the visitors effectively weathered the pressure. As the opening period progressed, the Falcons came into the match. For a four-minute stretch they pinned the Clan deep and nearly scored. In between two of the four first-half corner kicks,
Carlos Franco beat one man before bending a shot from 15 yards out on the left flank that Clan keeper Brandon Watson tipped over the bar.
Seattle Pacific out-shot Simon Fraser 6-4 in the half, but it was brief lapse on defense that allowed the goal. A throw-in found Camara on the edge of the box. He slipped a pass to Ryan Dhillon, drawing the defense near post and leaving Jones, the left midfielder, momentarily alone to finish first time from 10 yards.
Early in the second half Camara did the honors, converting Dhillon's right-wing cross at the near post in the 57th minute. Camara also scored the winner versus SPU at last season's game in Burnaby.
Kellum scored from the spot at 74:58 following a takedown foul in the box on a free kick. Kellum buried his kick low in the right corner with Watson going the other way. It was his fourth goal this season and it ended a string of 10 straight home shutouts by Watson.
However the rally was short-lived. Just over three minutes later, Jones struck on a deflected shot from the edge of the area after Seattle Pacific was unable to clear a free kick.
The Falcons have surrendered 11 goals this season after yielding just nine all of last season en route to a nation-leading 0.45 goals against average.
The SPU men close out the two-game road trip on Saturday with clash against Western Washington. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Harrington Field in Bellingham.
