SEATTLE – Mackenzie Nolte scored on a low shot across the goalmouth with 7:44 left to play Saturday, lifting Central Washington to a 1-0 road win over Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
The Falcons (5-2-1) fell for the first time in league play, falling to 2-1-0. They lost despite a 17-12 shot advantage.
Nolte got the game's only goal on a breakaway into the right side of the box. She raced toward the goal and delivered a 10-yard shot into the left side netting at 82:16. Michaela Wallace set up the play with a timely through pass.
"That was a tough loss. It was two good teams playing a good game," said SPU coach
Arby Busey. "Both teams created good, quality chances. One team finished, the other team didn't. So we go home disappointed tonight."
The Wildcats (6-2-0) evened their GNAC record at 1-1-0. Goalkeeper Emily Holt was credited with four saves en route to her fourth shutout.
"She had a good night tonight. There were some things that were bobbling around in their box that she cleaned up for them and kept us at bay," said Busey. "She was in good position all night. She made a lot of things look easy just by where she was positioned and when we shot it she was right there to make saves."
SPU had a 9-5 shot lead during the opening 45 minutes, including four quality chances. Two of those near-misses were saved, with the most dangerous being a low drive in the 26th minute by
Hannah Huesers that was smothered by Holt.
The Falcons came up empty on back-to-back opportunities in the 32nd minute when
Kelly Gould (Archbishop Murphy HS) nailed the crossbar with a 20-yard shot and Huesers gathered the rebound eight yards out, but her put-back try was too high.
"It was a surprise, kind of bounces off and gets onto her. She reacted well to get a foot to it and unfortunately just kind of put it high in that moment," Busey described. "I appreciate the fact that she was there and following it up and looking for her opportunity. She's very good at that and unfortunately that one just kind of went over the bar."
CWU picked up the attack after halftime and quickly reeled off five of the next six shots. The visitors' closest scoring chance came on a 57th-minute shot from the right side by Bailey Martoncik that banged off the crossbar.
Nine minutes later Martoncik broke free into the box, but her low shot carried just wide of the left post.
Huesers (Lake Stevens HS) nearly stopped the scoreless affair in the 71st minute after beating two defenders on a dribbling run into the box. She was one-on-one with Holt, who got just enough of a hand of the low shot to cause the ball to slowly trickle outside the left post.
Junior goalkeeper
Molly Stinson (Woodinville HS) stopped two shots for SPU.
The Falcons play their next two games on the road, beginning on Thursday afternoon at Simon Fraser.
"We've got to be excited about the next one. There's not much we can do about the one here tonight," Busey said. "We're disappointed that we didn't get a result, but we'll move on. We'll be okay.
"We've got a strong team and we'll get back on the training pitch this week and get ourselves right and go up to Canada and look to get back in the win column."
The next SPU home game is Oct. 6 at 4:30 p.m. versus undefeated Concordia.
