BURNABY, B.C. –
Maddie Krauss and
Emma Young each scored a first-half goal Thursday for Seattle Pacific, which overcame an early deficit to defeat Simon Fraser 2-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Terry Fox Field.
The Falcons (6-2-1) won for the fourth time in their last five games, improving to 3-1-0 in league play.
Simon Fraser (3-3-1) fell to 1-2-0 in GNAC games. They jumped out to an early lead with a goal 1:19 into the contest.
Samantha Donald fed a long pass to the center of the field for Emma Pringle, who launched a 28-yard blast into the left side of the SPU goal. Pringle has accounted for five of the Clan's six goals this season.
Emma Holm
Just one minute later Katelyn Erhardsen had a shot that was deflected into the air by Falcons goalkeeper
Molly Stinson. The floating carom was headed off the goal line by defender
Kaytlin Willis to prevent a second SFU tally.
Krauss (Lake Oswego, Ore.) evened the score 1-1 at 23:59. She raced to a loose ball just outside the Clan box and directed a low, 20-yard shot into the right side of the goal for her third strike of the season.
The game-winner was credited to Young (Kapolei, Hi.), a red-shirt freshman with the first shot of her collegiate career. She scored on a one-foot tap-in at 42:34 on a ball that was already rolling toward the goal. A Simon Fraser player tried to clear a ball five yards outside of her own box, but the ball traveled backwards and bounced over the onrushing goalkeeper 13 yards off her line.
Stinson (Woodinville HS) stopped nine shots in the winning effort for SPU.
Priya Sandhu was credited with eight saves for the Clan, who outshot the visitors, 18-13.
The SPU women remain on the road to visit Ellensburg, Wash. on Tuesday afternoon. They have a 3 p.m. rematch with the Central Washington squad that got a late goal in a 1-0 win Saturday versus the Falcons.
