CHICO, Calif. – Shelby Lanksbury delivered a low shot inside the left post with just over four minutes left to play Wednesday, lifting 24th-ranked Chico State to a 1-0 win over visiting Seattle Pacific in a non-conference women's soccer game at University Soccer Stadium.

The Falcons (2-1-0) lost for the first time while surrendering their first goal of the season. They opened the season with 284 shutout minutes before giving up Wednesday's late strike.

SPU's Molly Stinson registered seven saves, displaying why she was honored Tuesday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. But the junior goalkeeper could not prevent the decisive tally by Lanksbury.

The Wildcats senior forward made a dribbling run down the right flank and beat a defender before angling into the box. She sent a hard far-post shot from 15 yards out that narrowly avoided the outstretched arms of the diving Stinson at 85:53.

That game-winner halted a streak of 530 scoreless minutes in regular-season games for Stinson.

Chico goalkeeper Caitlyn Duval was not required to make a save en route to her second shutout. Her team doubled up the shot count on the Falcons, 12-6. The Wildcats sent eight shots directly on goal, while blanking SPU in that category.

Lanksbury was dangerous all night and had the host's best non-scoring opportunity. In the 75th minute on a corner kick served into the center of the box, she had a firm header that carried just over the crossbar.

One minute before her score, Lanksbury sent a shot on the SPU goal that was snagged by Stinson.

The Wildcats controlled the ball early and attempted the game's first four shots, all inside the opening eight minutes. Three of those attacks required saving. The first two were routine stops, but the third required Stinson to dive toward the left post to deflect the ball away from danger.

SPU didn't try a shot until the 17th minute when Hannah Huesers' looped the ball over the crossbar from 25 yards out. The visitors' second attempt came 29 second later, by Megan Moore, and Kaytlin Willis had a 25th-minute effort.

The Falcons continued to pressure the goal and didn't allow another Chico shot until the 33rd minute.

At the half, the Wildcats owned a 5-3 edge in the shot count with four of those aimed directly at goal while SPU didn't have any attempts on frame.

The Falcons return to Seattle for their home opener against Metro State on Saturday.  Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium as the nightcap of a doubleheader with the SPU men, who play at 4:30 p.m.
