SEATTLE – Two prolific scorers and two novice goal-producers combined for an offensive onslaught Thursday.

Gabe Kellum scored twice and added an assist for Seattle Pacific, which tallied three goals in each half of a 6-1 triumph over Colorado Christian in a non-conference men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (1-1-1) won for the first time in 2016 by notching their highest single-game goal total since 2014.

Along with Kellum, SPU also got a pair of goals from Stephen MacDonald.

"The thing that made both of them so effective was they were unselfish," Coach Mark Collings described. "When they become unselfish like that they are really tough to defend because they are unpredictable. Each of them had two great finishes, really clinical strikes."

MacDonald (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Kellum (Rennes, France) are tied for team-high honors this season with three goals apiece.

Jess Cayetano and Ryan Higgins accounted for the other two tallies, both notching their inaugural collegiate goals.

Collings sought increased early effort from his Falcons, who were winless in their opening two games for the first time since 2011.

"After watching film and talking to the guys we felt like we hadn't played with a lot of urgency, especially to start the game. So it was great to see us come out with a real purpose and energy tonight."

That passion from the opening whistle was parlayed into immediate results with a goal just 5:49 into the contest.

Freshman Sam Malloch's shot was blocked by the goalkeeper and the rebound caromed back into the center of the box. Cayetano (Portland, Ore.) raced to the ball and first-timed a 16-yard shot off the underside of the crossbar.

"The goal by Jess was great and the buildup leading to that goal was fantastic," Collings said. "Jess' finish through traffic was really nice."

MacDonald made it 2-0 with a hard, 22-yard blast across the box and into the right side of the goal at 9:17. A short back-pass from Jordan Kollars set up the score, the 17th of MacDonald's career.

Kollars created the third SPU goal as well. He pushed a pass to Kellum, who dribbled into the left side of he box before slipping a 10-yard shot inside the left post at 24:59.

Higgins headed in the fourth score on a perfect free kick from Kollars (Central Kitsap HS) for his third assist of the night. The serve from outside the box toward the right side found Higgins alone at the far post for a 12-yard score.

The Cougars' lone goal came at 51:52 on a 12-yard shot from Genaro Arellano off a low pass from JackMccunn that drew the visitors within 4-1.

Gabe Kellum
Kellum responded 71 seconds later with a brilliant 25-yard strike from outside the box on the left side that curved into the upper right corner.

"He's one guy that if he's given a little bit of space and can get his head up, the way he hits the ball it's a natural strike for him," Collings said. "Gabe got ahold of that one and, boy, it doesn't get much better than that."

The final scoring play was initiated by Kellum's pass to Parker Conaway, who directed the ball into the goalmouth and set up MacDonald for a six-yard flip at 55:48.

The Falcons forged their highest scoring game since a 6-0 win over South Dakota Mines on Oct. 23, 2014. The last time they amassed more goals was on Oct. 16, 2010 in an 8-1 victory over U-Mary.

SPU starting goalkeeper Cody Lang (Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark HS) did not make a save before being replaced in the 59th minute by Kary Whitney (San Diego, Calif.), who was credited with one stop.

Brandon Eide collected seven saves for the Cougars (0-3), several of them denying breakaways from the Falcons, who outshot the visitors 22-5.

The SPU men remain at home to host Metro State on Saturday. Kick-off is 4:30 p.m. at Interbay Stadium as the opener of a doubleheader with the Falcons women who play at 7 p.m.
