SEATTLE – Returning All-America performer Lauren Glover led Seattle Pacific on the floor exercise, and three different freshmen had the top Falcon scores on the other events, but Oregon State won all four events to win the women's gymnastics season opener on Friday night in Brougham Pavilion.

The Beavers, ranked No. 9 nationally among NCAA Division I competitors and already with one meet in the books, finished with 194.525 points. Division II SPU tallied 189.425.

Falcons senior Glover (Fort Collins, Colo.) wrapped up the floor for the Falcons with a 9.725. That was good for a fourth-place tie overall. The floor was one of two events on which Glover was an All-American at last year's USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships. (The other was the vault.)

Falcons freshman Darian Burns (Atlanta) totaled 37.225 in the all-around competition, second behind OSU's Kaytianna McMillan (38.700).

"It was a good first meet for Darian to get her feet wet as a college gymnast," said Laurel Tindall, starting her 42nd season as the SPU head coach. "She does have a super-strong vault and it's good that when we're home she can start on that event and kind of set her up for the rest of the meet."

Burns was Seattle Pacific's pacesetter on the vault, pulling a 9.775 to tie for fourth place. She did that from the final position in the lineup as junior Ariana Harger, who holds the school vault record at 9.90, was unavailable.

"We decided that without our ace that Darian was going to be the anchor," Tindall explained. "She's got a good vault and she's going to rival for that anchor position anyway."

Sienna Brane (Snohomish, Wash. / Glacier Peak HS), one of just two Washington gymnasts in a Falcons uniform, was tops for the team on the uneven bars. Her score of 9.550 was good for fifth place.

Miyuki Matsune (West Covina, Calif.) led the way for SPU with a no-fall routine on the balance beam that scored a 9.750 for fifth place.

Matsune's routine was one of four no-falls out of six competitors for Seattle Pacific. Burns (9.725), Glover (9.70), and Tracie Villanueva (9.625) had the others. The Falcons' total of 47.900 was their highest of the night, four-tenths more than the matching 47.500s on the vault and floor.

"Our beam as a whole was really good with 9.7 performances from three of the kids," said Tindall. "We've had an outstanding beam group the last couple years. That should really be our best event this year and I'm hoping it pans out that way."

The mid-189 team total was slightly higher than last year's opening score of 188.75. SPU proceeded to place third nationally at the 2016 USAG Collegiate Championships.

Oregon State's McMillan won three of the four events, taking the vault at 9.900 while tying with teammate Erika Aufiero for first on the bars at 9.775 and teammate Madeline Gardiner atop the floor field at 9.825.

A trio of Beavers tied for top honors with matching scores of 9.875 on the beam: Gardiner, Dani Dessaints, and Silvia Colussi-Pelaez.

Harger was absent in the floor lineup, an event in which she was the co-national champion last year. That left the Falcons with only five competitors in the vault and floor events.

"We definitely made enough mistakes that we can make a lot of corrections for next week. The first being we want to have six people on every event, that's really important," Tindall said.

"In this first meet there was a lot of pressure with only five kids on an event. We're hoping that some people step up and do what they need to do to get into the lineup."

The Falcons and Beavers will go at it again next Saturday in Corvallis, joined by Northern Illinois. The meet in OSU's Gill Coliseum begins at 12 noon.
