SEATTLE – Less than 24 hours after helping run Seattle Pacific squarely into the national picture for the distance medley relay,
Mary Charleson did the same thing for herself in the mile.
The Falcons junior posted a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 56.37 seconds on Saturday at the UW Invitational indoor track and field meet. Her time at the Dempsey Indoor facility on the University of Washington campus put her at No. 13 on the NCAA Division II national list as of Saturday evening.
On Friday night, Charleson (Mill Creek, Wash. / Henry M. Jackson HS) ran the 1600-meter anchor leg on SPU's 4000-meter distance medley relay, teaming with senior
Sarah Macdonald, freshman
Lani Taylor, and junior
Chynna Phan for a time of 11:42.25. That time still ranked No. 2 in D2 as of Saturday and gives that foursome an excellent chance of making the national cut.
Charleson's mile time was more than two seconds faster than the 4:58.95 she ran two weeks ago at the UW Indoor Preview. It gave her 33rd place on Saturday among the 74 finishers.
She wasn't the only Falcon coming up big in that race. Macdonald (Tucson, Ariz.) raced a season-best 5:03.39, moving closer to the D2 provisional qualifying time of 5:01.11. Freshman
Kate Lilly (Renton, Wash. / Hazen HS) clocked 5:07.82, way faster than her college debut time of 5:19.22 on Jan. 14. Senior
Hannah Calvert (Enumclaw, Wash. / Enumclaw HS) also rewrote her personal best, coming across in 5:09.25. Her old PR was 5:12.74.
Freshman
Lani Taylor posted her first career NCAA provisional time. Taylor (Seattle / West Seattle HS) ran to a third-place finish in the 400 meters, stopping the watch in 56.79 seconds. That beat the 57.01 qualifying standard, and was more than a full second faster than the 57.91 she ran at the Indoor Preview.
Sophomore
Geneva Lehnert tied for sixth in the high jump, matching her provisional-qualifying season-best of 5 feet, 5 inches.
Seattle Pacific has next weekend off from competition, returning to action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11, at the Husky Classic.
AND THAT'S NOT ALL
--The women's mile record belonging to former SPU star Jessica Pixler was broken on Saturday. Brie Felnagle, who starred in high school at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma and now competes for Adidas, won in 4:27.27. Pixler's record was 4:33.46, set in 2010.
