AZUSA, Calif. –
Jordan McPhee was back for an encore.
McPhee scored Seattle Pacific's final 10 points on Saturday night, as the Falcons came from a one-point deficit late in the game to beat UC San Diego at the Azusa Pacific West Region Crossover Classic women's basketball tournament, 65-59.
Senior guard McPhee (Normandy Park, Wash. / Mount Rainier HS), coming off a career-high 30 points in Friday's 80-69 victory against No. 16-ranked Azusa in the Felix Event Center,, finished with 21 on Saturday as the Falcons improved to 4-0. She had 11 of those in in the first half, and in fact hadn't scored in the second half until draining a pair of free throws with 2:23 left.
That pushed SPU back in front, 57-56.
Courtney Hollander stole the ball on UCSD's ensuing trip downcourt, and McPhee then drained a 3-pointer from 22 feet away on the right side to make it 60-56 with 2:01 left.
After the teams traded scoreless possessions, the ball wound up in McPhee's hands again. She drove to the hoop, scooped it in, was fouled, and completed the three-point play for a 63-56 lead at the 49-second mark. The Tritons cut it to 63-59 with 44 seconds left when Joleen Yang drained a 3-pointer from way on top of the key – their first point after a scoreless drought of 5:01.
McPhee drained two more free throws with 17.1 seconds to go. UC San Diego had four more shots – all from behind the arc – but none of them fell.
Junior center
Carly Rataushk came off the bench to add 11 points for Seattle Pacific, and
Lindsay Lee pumped in 10.
Senior forward Hollander was limited to just five points, but collected a team-high 10 rebounds. That was her third double-digit rebounding performance in four games. McPhee was right behind with nine boards.
Except for the opening moments of the game when the Kayla Sato popped in back-to-back 3-pointers, Seattle Pacific led for most of the first half. It grew to as large as nine at 33-24 midway through the second quarter before the Tritons finished the half on an 11-5 run to get within 38-35 at halftime.
UC San Diego edged ahead 54-53 on a free throw by Dalayna Sampton with 6:43 left – its first lead since the 6:46 mark of the first quarter. That grew to 56-53 before the Falcons clamped down defensively, forcing the Tritons into five straight misses while McPhee put the next eight points on the board.
McPhee and Hollander both were named to the all-tournament team, as Seattle Pacific was the only team to win both games. Azusa and San Diego split; Western Washington lost both.
BY THE NUMBERS
