SEATTLE – Rachel Shim tallied a career-high 17 points on Saturday afternoon, but Simon Fraser used a 9-0 scoring run in the third quarter to cut short a Seattle Pacific rally, and went on to beat the Falcons in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game, 72-60.

Playing on Homecoming afternoon in Brougham Pavilion, the Falcons (17-7, 9-7 GNAC) dropped their second straight.

Senior guard Shim (Sammamish, Wash. / Eastlake HS) hit 6 of 11 from the field, and beat her previous career high of 14. She had hit that total twice, most recently on Jan. 31 in a 72-59 victory at Saint Martin's.

Junior forward Courtney Hollander (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden Christian HS) added 13 points for SPU.

The Falcons had trimmed a nine-point halftime deficit to six at 45-39 with 3:42 left in the third quarter. Simon Fraser (22-4, 13-3 GNAC) then got two straight baskets from Ellen Kett (one of them a 3-pointer), and two straight from Meg Wilson. That helped push the lead back to 15 at 54.39.

Down 11 to start the fourth quarter a 54-43, SPU got as close as seven at 59-52 with 5:22 still remaining. The Clan responded with four straight points, and never led their lead dip below double digits again.

"I thought we had a lot of good fight today," head coach Julie Heisey said. "We had a lot of kids come in and give us fight. We got down, but we were able to cut it to nine at the half, then we got it down to six. But (the Clan) made plays. Simon Fraser is a very good team."

Wilson finished with 21 points for Simon Fraser.

The Falcons were trailing by just four at 27-23 approaching the midpoint of the second quarter, Simon Fraser then put 10 straight mostly-uncontested points on the board: two lay-ins, a short putback, and four free throws, stretching its lead to 14. SPU closed within 39-30 by halftime.

'The first half, we weren't doing terrible things on offense," Heisey said. "We just didn't score"

Seattle Pacific shot 38.9 percent from the field (21 of 54), a 10-point jump from its season-low 28.6 percent in Thursday's 69-50 loss to Western Washington. Simon Fraser, which swept the home-and-home season series, hit 46.3 percent (25 of 54).

Still seeking to clinch a spot in next month's Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament, Seattle Pacific takes its final regular-season road trip next week. First stop is at Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. Pacific time, followed by a visit to current national No. 2-ranked Alaska Anchorage next Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Pacific.

"The good thing is, we're still alive," Heisey said. "As long as there's still season left, there's still an opportunity to mature – and we still have the desire and the drive to mature. We just can't continue having lulls."
