PORTLAND, Ore. – Nine is enough ... at least for now.
It's also a program record ... at least for now.
Nine. That's how many players Seattle Pacific placed on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic women's basketball team.
Not only is that the most in the conference this year (Western Oregon was next with seven), it's more than the Falcons have ever placed on any all-academic team. The previous high was seven, in 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2016.
"I'm proud of our kids. I don't think people realize how much time it takes to be a student and be an athlete," SPU head coach
Julie Heisey said. "We have a lot of science majors. Even on that Monday (two weeks ago) when we had a snow day, we had kids who were in biology lab.
"It speaks well of our program and our kids that they want do well in the classroom and do well on the court."
Leading the way for the Falcons, who are 17-7 overall and in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament berth, are a pair of seniors who are on the squad for the third year in row.
Rodrigues
Hannah Rodrigues (Eugene, Ore.) has a 3.76 grade-point average as an applied human biology major. A steady presence off the bench who also has seen regular starting duty during her four-year career, Rodrigues is averaging 2.3 points and 2.5 rebounds this season.
Lukasiewicz
Stacey Lukasiewicz (Centennial, Colo.) sports a 3.48 GPA as an exercise science major. Like Rodrigues, she is a steady contributor both as a starter and as a reserve. Lukasiewicz is averaging 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds, and her 58 assists rank No. 2 on the team. She also often provides a defensive spark.
SPU has four players – all juniors – who made the team for the second straight year.
McPhee
Jordan McPhee (Normandy Park, Wash. / Mount Rainier HS) carries a near-perfect 3.98 GPA as a business major. Just last week, she was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for the first time by sports information directors from the three West Region conferences. McPhee is in her second year as a regular starter, and is No. 2 for the Falcons in scoring (10.8), is tied for No. 2 in rebounding (5.3), and shoots 80.2 percent from the free throw line.
Pagano
Erica Pagano (Happy Valley, Ore.) is a business and marketing major with a 3.73 GPA. She is in her first year as a starter, and is delivering an average of 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, both single-season career highs. In addition, Pagano is one of SPU's best shooters from the field, currently hitting at 49.7 percent. She hits 82.1 percent of her free throws.
Hollander
Courtney Hollander (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden Christian HS) is a 3.68 student as a business major. She is the leading scorer for the Falcons at 12.2 points per game, pulls down a team-leading average of 7.1 rebounds, and it yet another of the team's deadly free throw shooters, hitting 85.1 percent. She has five double-doubles this season and 14 for her career.
Lee
Lindsay Lee (Spokane, Wash. / Lewis & Clark HS) carries a 3.66 GPA as a health and fitness education major. She has blossomed into a steady producer off the bench this season. Lee averages 4.8 points and 1.7 assists, and is one of Seattle Pacific's best 3-point shooters at 40.6 percent. She hits a solid .489 overall from the field.
Sophomores
Julia Haining,
Jaylee Albert, and
Madison Wright are all first-time All-Academic team members.
Haining
Haining (Lynnwood, Wash. / Inglemoor HS) is an accounting / business major with a 3.75 GPA. Before suffering an injury on Jan. 26 at Northwest Nazarene that has kept her on the sidelines for the past six game, Haining was enjoying a career year, with averages of 5.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and a team-best .573 shooting mark from the field.
Albert
Albert (Hamilton, Mont.) has a 3.53 GPA as a business major. She has been seeing steady playing time as a reserve, and is averaging 2.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. Albert has the team's best shooting percentage from downtown, hitting .410.
