ANCHORAGE, Alaska –
Hannah Rodrigues scored 13 points – all from the free throw line, tying the school record for single-game foul shooting accuracy – but No. 2-ranked Alaska Anchorage overpowered a short-handed Seattle Pacific team on Saturday night, rolling to a 94-50 Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball victory in the Alaska Airlines Center.
Autummn Williams poured in 22 points for the Seawolves (25-1, 18-0 GNAC), who won their 21st game in a row.
The Falcons (17-9, 9-9 GNAC) once again were without the services of starting forward, leading scorer and rebounder
Courtney Hollander and starting point guard
Rachel Shim. They also missed Thursday's 63-61 loss at Alaska Fairbanks.
Hannah
Rodrigues
Senior forward Rodrigues (Eugene, Ore.), who started in place of Hollander, hit 13 of 14 from the line, a 92.9 percentage. That matched the record (with a minimum of 10 attempts) set by Kerie Hughes on Jan. 5, 2002 against Western Washington.
Even with the loss, Seattle Pacific moved closer to a spot in the GNAC Tournament, thanks to Concordia's 76-61 defeat at home against Northwest Nazarene. The Cavaliers are now tied with Central Washington at 7-11, two games behind the Falcons with two remaining in the regular season.
One more SPU win or Concordia loss – and those teams meet in Brougham Pavilion this coming Thursday at 7:00 p.m. – secures a postseason berth.
"It was a tough week. We have two games left, and we have to find out how to be the best team we can be," Falcons coach
Julie Heisey said. "We were playing one of the best teams in the country tonight at (their) home. Obviously, our effort was there. We tried to prepare as best we could. But when you're not playing with your whole team, there are certain things you can't do."
Alaska Anchorage went on an 13-2 run to take a 19-7 lead just beyond the midpoint of the first quarter. The Seawolves' margin never dropped below double digits the rest of the night. They had a 52-23 advantage at the break.
"We just challenged the kids at halftime that we have to grow from this tough situation," Heisey said. "How are we going to respond? It wasn't perfect, but we did do a lot of things better (during the second half)."
In addition to her 13 points, Rodrigues had four rebounds (three at the offensive end) and two assists in 31 minutes.
"Hannah was amazing. She got a lot of opportunities inside because she was aggressive," Heisey said. "I was proud of her effort. She does a lot of things on defense, too, and that was good."
Jordan McPhee
Junior guard
Jordan McPhee (Normandy Park, Wash. / Mount Rainier HS) added an all-around stat line of 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and one blocked shot. Junior guard
Lindsay Lee (Spokane, Wash. / Lewis & Clark HS) added 10 points off the bench, draining 4 of 5 from the field, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range.
Although only Williams is the only Anchorage player to average in double figures, four Seawolves went for 10 or more on Saturday.
The last team to score that many points on Seattle Pacific was Drury in a 94-83 victory in the first round of the 2004 Elite Eight.
