DAVIS, Calif. – Kristi Hayashida tied the 16-year-old school record on the balance beam with a winning score of 9.925 for Seattle Pacific, which compiled a season-high point total Friday in a four-team meet at The Pavilion on the UC Davis campus.

The Falcons senior, whose previous beam best was 9.90, nailed a near-flawless routine to equal the school standard of 9.925 established by Alison Siegel on Feb. 3, 2001.

"Alison was also an awesome beam worker. She and Kristi are both deserving of being school record holders," said Laurel Tindall, who coached both of them. "A 9.95 would beat it and I would say Kristi is definitely capable of that. She pretty much stuck her dismount, but there was a little room for error there."

Kristi Hayashida
Hayashida (Mililani, Hawaii) is a three-time All-American in that event. She placed second nationally on the beam at the last year's USA Gymnastics Collegiate meet after finishing third in 2015 and 10th in 2014. Hayashida hadn't been as consistent on the beam this season and her previous season-high of 9.725 was a mark she topped nine times last year.

"She had a really confident beam routine tonight, obviously her best one all year. Kristi just hasn't been that confident this year so that was really good to see her hit a great routine," Tindall said. "This is definitely the kind of performance that we'd like to see out of her at nationals."

Sparking the dramatic improvement may have been a change in her beam routine. Hayashida worked on that alteration with assistant coach Sarah Jean (Sullivan) Marshall during practice.

"Sarah changed her leap pass this week, I guess Kristi just wasn't confident with the other one," Tindall described. "Usually it's not the leap pass she has a problem with, it's the aerial at the end. But maybe changing the leap pass made her more confident of the aerial at the end."

Along with Hayashida, three other Falcons cracked the top 10 on the beam. Itzia San Roman was tied in fourth (9.800), Miyuki Matsune was eighth (9.775) and Lauren Glover ninth (9.750).

For the second straight meet SPU improved its highest team total, this time with 192.600 points. That is 0.30 better than the 192.300 turned in Sunday in Missouri. The NCAA Division II Falcons finished fourth among the field of Division I competitors.

Host UC Davis rallied during the final event to forge a first-place total of 194.650, followed by San Jose State with 193.900 and Sacramento State with 193.250.

SPU junior Ariana Harger received a score of 9.75 to tie for third on the vault en route to a fifth-place all-around tally of 37.675. Harger (Castro Valley, Calif.) was the team's top floor exercise performer, placing seventh with a 9.825.

The uneven bars have been troublesome this season, but the Falcons flourished Friday during the third rotation. Five gymnasts recorded season-high marks as the team compiled a score of 48.200 to surpass their previous season bars best of 47.225 by nearly a point.

Freshman Darian Burns (Atlanta, Ga.) topped SPU's bars corps with a season-high 9.725 followed by Breanna Beltran's 9.675. Harger, Matsune and Maryanna Peterson each eclipsed their season-best bars output with matching marks of 9.600. Hayashida garnered a career-high 9.350.

The beam was the Falcons final event and they finished in style with 48.225 points. That was their second-highest total this year, bettered only by a 48.250 last Friday.

"We were so much better on bars and then we got great beam scores," said Tindall. "Our floor was just a little off and our vault was good, but not great. So we really made up for that with the final two events. The bars and beam lineups really came through for us tonight."

SPU started the meet on the floor and posted its fourth-highest team score of the season despite no gymnasts achieving season high marks on that apparatus. Harger led the way with a 9.825 followed by San Roman (9.650), Kylee Gauna (9.475), Hayashida (9.450) and Glover (9.350).

Harger is the defending national champion on the floor after tying for gold medal honors in April at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships.

The Falcons host the 2017 USAG nationals at Brougham Pavilion from April 7-9. They placed third nationally in each of the last three seasons.

Friday's second rotation featured the SPU gymnasts on the vault and they accumulated a fine total of 48.425. Harger's third-place mark of 9.775 was followed by a trio of teammates tying for 12th. Beltran, Glover and Burns each earned the same score of 9.675.

The SPU gymnasts remain on the road next week for their fourth straight meet away from Seattle. They visit Sacramento State on Saturday, Mar. 4 at 7 p.m. for a three-team meet that includes UC Davis.
