SEATTLE – It wasn't exactly home. But Alaska Airlines Arena just across town from the Seattle Pacific campus seemed just as sweet for the road-weary Falcons gymnasts.

SPU shattered its season-best team score Saturday with a mark of 194.100 that is the seventh-highest point total in school history, concluding its regular-season women's gymnastics schedule in a dual meet at Washington.

The Falcons surpassed their previous 2017 best by 1.50 points. That was a score of 192.600 registered on Feb. 24 at UC Davis.

"It's been a long time coming," exclaimed SPU coach Laurel Tindall. "We knew this team had potential, but it's been a long time for them to really put all four events together on the same night. We were able to take advantage of the opportunities tonight."

The SPU gymnasts have been nomads for the last month, visiting six different arenas since their last home meet at Brougham Pavilion on Feb. 4. They responded to the familiar surroundings of a Seattle arena by compiling the most points since the school record of 194.875 was set on April 9, 2016.

"I keep stats for what our team score would be if everybody got their best score. That's like a 194.90 this year," Tindall said. "We had a lot of things that weren't their best so we were in the ballpark, but still have room to improve."

In her 42nd year as the head coach, Tindall called the UW campus home for two years as a collegiate competitor from 1972-73. She won the 1973 national vault title as a Husky before transferring to Seattle Pacific for her final two seasons and capturing the 1975 vault crown as a Falcon.

The host Huskies won Saturday's team competition, compiling 196.925 points. They were led by the one-two all-around finishes of Joslyn Goings (39.350) and Hailey Burleson (38.825).

Ariana Harger
SPU junior Ariana Harger (Castro Valley, Calif.) placed third in the all-around with a four-event total of 38.800. She tied for third on the vault with a mark of 9.800. Harger also shared third place on the floor exercise, matching freshman teammate Darian Burns' 9.875 score.

"That's awesome because that will really help Ari in the all-around qualifying," said Tindall. "We think she's qualified in vault and floor for the Division I regionals, but there's an outside chance she could get in there as an all-arounder too."

If Harger does qualify for the NCAA Division I regional championships, she will return to the UW campus as Alaska Airlines Arena hosts that event on April 1 at 4 p.m.

All five Falcons' counters on the floor achieved season-high scores en route to the team's best total of the season on that apparatus, 49.05. Along with Harger and Burns, Lauren Glover (9.850), Itzia San Roman (9.750) and Kristi Hayashida (9.700) either equaled or eclipsed their respective season-best floor efforts.

SPU also thrived on the balance beam, its final event of the night. Freshman Miyuki Matsune (9.775) and senior Breanna Beltran (9.425) set season highs to help the team amass 48.425 points. That was the Falcons top beam total of the year.

Beltran was SPU's leader on the uneven bars with a seventh-place score of 9.750 and Matsune's team-leading 9.775 beam performance also put her in the No. 7 position overall.

Burleson and Goings tied for top honors on the beam with scores of 9.925. That was one of three first-place ties with UW teammates for Burleson, who shared a win on the vault (9.825) with Alexandra Yacalis and the bars (9.875) with Kaitlyn Duranczyk. Yacalis topped the floor field with a mark of 9.925.

The SPU gymnasts travel to San Jose, Calif. next weekend for their conference championships. The six-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) meet is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 18 at San Jose State's Event Center.
