SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Seattle Pacific's varsity eight crew placed sixth in heat racing Saturday to miss out on San Diego Crew Classic grand finals qualification and the second boat finished fourth on the only day of the Husky Open.

San Diego Crew Classic
The Falcons top eight-oared crew, directed by freshman coxswain Jacqueline Kemp, completed the 2,000-meter Mission Bay course in 7-minutes, 26.86-seconds. They had lots of open water ahead of seventh-place Arizona State, which finished in 7:46.70.

Western Washington won that heat in 6:54.26, followed by Humboldt State (7:01.52), Purdue (7:11.07) and a second Humboldt entry (7:18.66). That quartet earned spots in the grand final where they will be joined by the top-four finishers from the second heat.

UC San Diego posted a winning time of 7:01.04 in that race, leading Grand Valley (7:04.56), UCSD's second crew (7:16.69) and Orange Coast (7:16.72).

The SPU crew will compete in the six-boat petite final on Sunday at 9:04 a.m. Pacific Time. The Falcons will row in lane 3, flanked by Colorado (1), UC Davis (2), Chapman (4), Arizona State (5) and Long Beach State (6).

Sitting in the stroke seat of the SPU shell is freshman Chloe Remley, a native of San Diego, who has prior Crew Classic racing experience. She attended High Tech High School.

Husky Open
The Falcons second varsity eight stayed in Seattle to race on the Montlake Cut in the Husky Open. They competed in the third-varsity event, clocking a fourth-place time of 7:57.86.

Seattle University handily won the race in 7:08.67, nearly 23 seconds faster than runner-up Portland (7:31.59). Pacific Lutheran placed third (7:38.87) with an open-water advantage over SPU.

Senior coxswain Paige Ortiz is the only veteran in that SPU shell as all eight rowers are novices, including five freshmen.
