POMONA, Calif. – Natalie Di Angelo scored in the fifth minute of overtime Tuesday, lifting Cal Poly Pomona to a 2-1 win over Seattle Pacific in a non-conference women's soccer game at Kellogg Field.
The Falcons (2-2) completed their non-league slate with a .500 record after winning their first two games of the season. They fell by a similar 2-1 scoreline on Saturday at UC Colorado Springs.
Pomona (4-1) had the only three shots of the extra session, including the one that produced a golden goal at 94:47. A corner kick rattled around in the goalmouth before Samantha Putman tapped it to Di Angelo, who finished from 12 yards into the lower left corner.
"It's a tough result, but I couldn't be prouder of our team tonight," said third-year SPU coach
Arby Busey. "They are in the third game of an extremely long, arduous road trip. The conditions that they dealt with and the way that they played tonight, the effort that they put into the game, I'm really proud of them.
"Our sport sometimes can be cruel and your efforts aren't necessarily rewarded. We deserved more from the game based upon what we invested in it, but hats off to Cal Poly for finding a goal in overtime. If we can continue to play like this we're going to find ourselves on the right side of the scoreboard more often than not, but tonight wasn't one of those nights."
The Broncos got on the board first after a brilliant run into the box by Stephanie Rodriguez. She accepted a through pass at the top of the 18 from Putnam and dribbled into the left side, beating an SPU defender and goalkeeper
Molly Stinson before sending a nine-yard shot into the open goal's right side netting at 19:27.
The equalizer came five minutes later on a free kick by SPU senior
Maddy Booster, who was fouled 40 yards from the goal. She served a ball to the top of the box where
Kaytlin Willis one-touched a pass to the left side.
Julia DeVere received the pass and quickly delivered a 16-yard shot into the right side of the goal at 24:20. That was the first score of the season for the junior midfielder and the third of her career.
The tying goal came on the first shot of the game for SPU, which had conceded four attempts to that point.
"That's been the way we've been operating, going behind and then really kicking into gear," Busey explained. "Their goal woke us up a little bit and we started to claw our way into the game. We got a goal and built some momentum off of it. We had some really good sequences to end the first half."
The Falcons nearly claimed the lead just before halftime, but Makayla Sontelie's hard shot caromed off the crossbar. That was one of four unanswered shots by the visitors during the final four minutes of the first half.
Sonstelie had another opportunity near the goalmouth in the 71st minute. A corner kick bounded loose in the box and her point-blank attempt was deflected by goalkeeper Ricki Ives.
"She was great. Makayla provided a huge spark for us and was very much a bright spot amongst many," said Busey. "She was really good and gave us a big lift coming off the bench. In the third game on the road like this, that's huge to get somebody doing that for you."
Asia Cayetano was one of three Falcons to play the entire game
SPU continued to apply pressure and put one into the back of the net in the 86th minute, but it was disallowed by offside.
Sophia Chilczuk sent a shot off the left post that
Kasey Reeve followed with a tap in at the open goal.
Ives and Stinson each recorded three saves and Pomona had a 15-8 shot advantage.
The Falcons goalkeeper is averaging 4.8 saves per game and is on pace to eclipse the school's career record. Stinson's 231 saves are 40 shy of the SPU career standard of 271 established by Jennifer Hull from 2001-04.
The SPU women remain on the road, starting Great Northwest Athletic Conference play at Simon Fraser on Saturday. Kick-off is 5 p.m. PDT at Terry Fox Field in Burnaby, B.C.
Despite the fact a road game looms, Busey is pleased the team get to stay in Seattle for a couple days.
"First and foremost we get some home cooking and try to settle into a bit of a routine at home before we play our fourth game of four on the road. We've been on the road for what seems like ages. It will be good to be home for all of 48 hours before we turn around and head north to face a conference opponent that is very good and difficult to beat at their place."
They Falcons finally return to Seattle for a game on Sept. 21 at 4:30 p.m. when Saint Martin's visits Interbay Stadium.
