SEATTLE –
Julia DeVere and
Simone Herzberg scored two goals apiece – one in each half for both players – as Seattle Pacific beat Saint Martin's in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Thursday afternoon, 4-1.
The Falcons (4-2-0, 2-0-0 GNAC) won their second in a row, both in conference play. It was their 20th straight victory against Saint Martin's (0-6-0, 0-1-0 GNAC), as they have never lost to or tied their counterparts from Lacey.
Junior midfielder DeVere (Bellingham, Wash. / Squalicum HS) put SPU on the Interbay Stadium scoreboard at the 10:54 mark. Junior forward
Kasey Reeve (Fountain Valley, Calif.) sent the ball into the penalty area from the left wing side, bringing Saints goalkeeper Ali Koehler off her line. But DeVere got to the ball first and slipped it past Koehler into the back right corner for her second goal of the year.
Herzberg made it 2-0 just before halftime. The senior midfielder from Portland launched a rocket shot from 30 yards away on the left side. It rose just beyond the reach of Koehler and flew into the high right corner for her first tally in 2017.
In their first five games, the Falcons had scored just once in the opening 45 minutes.
DeVere struck again at 62:34. Koehler deflected an initial shot, but the rebound came right back to freshman midfielder
Claire Neder (Spokane, Wash. / Mead HS). Neder, playing in the middle of the box, sent a short pass out to DeVere, who easily drilled it into a wide-open net from 12 yards in front of the left post. She now has three goals for the season.
A give-and-go play in the box led to Herzberg's second tally of both the game and the season. Junior midfielder
Makayla Sonstelie (Auburn, Wash. / Auburn HS), playing in the box, passed toward the left to junior forward Mikayla Mury (Kelso, Wash. / Kelso HS). Mury sent it across the goalmouth, and Herzberg punched it in uncontested at 74:19.
The Saints ended SPU's bid for its first shutout of the season when Lauren Allison scored at 81:09.
Seattle Pacific is back at Interbay on Saturday, kicking off against Northwest Nazarene at 4:00 p.m.
