DENVER – The Seattle Pacific women have owned the lead for just 2-minutes, 28-seconds of the 183 minutes they've played this season. Nevertheless, they possess a perfect record.
Kasey Reeve got a foot to the ball at the top of the box and it trickled in for a golden goal that lifted Seattle Pacific to a 2-1 overtime victory over Metro State in a non-conference soccer game Thursday at the Regency Athletic Complex.
Kasey Reeve
The junior forward leads the team with three goals, including both game-winning tallies for the Falcons (2-0) who got their second come-from-behind win of the year. They trailed 2-0 at halftime last Thursday at home in the season-opener against Chico State. SPU registered three unanswered goals, the last by Reeve coming in the 88th minute of that 3-2 victory.
"We'd like to not have as much drama as we have in the first two games," said third-year coach
Arby Busey. "But if that's what it takes, these guys are willing and able to get the job done.
"We've got such a resilient group that relishes the opportunity to play all 90 minutes with each other. Today, they got an extra couple. All credit to the mentality of the girls on the team, to have an attitude of never giving in and finding a way."
Simone Herzberg lofted a long through ball over the defense. Metro goalkeeper Breanna Flores and a defender converged on the ball at the same time as Reeve, 16 yards from the goal line. Reeve tapped the ball in traffic and it had just enough pace to carry inside the right post 2:40 into overtime.
"I didn't think that Simone, at that time in the game, was going to have enough leg to be able to reach the back line," Busey said. "Simone dug deep and put it in a spot that obviously caused them problems. Credit to Kasey for just staying on it and making things happen."
Flores finished the game with three saves for the Roadrunners (1-2), who were outshot 16-6.
Molly Stinson required just one save for SPU.
The hosts opened the scoring just 53 seconds into the contest. Regina Banks raced with the ball down the left flank and dribbled along the SPU goal line before slipping a pass into the center of the box. Elise Boisnard reached the ball and sent a shot into the left of the goal for a 1-0 Metro lead.
"It put us on our heels a little bit right out of the gate. Early on we played a bit frantic and it rattled us to give one up that early," Busey described.
"I could see it in the girls eyes and the way that they played that they believed that they were going to be able to come back from giving up that early goal. That confidence grew as the game went on and we kept creating quality chances."
SPU controlled the run of play after that, but was unable to find the goal until 70 minutes later when
Megan Moore flicked a high pass toward the right post.
Mickayla Mury got there first and directed a shot across the goalmouth and in at 70:18.
"That was a pretty good combination sequence in and around the 18," said Busey. "
Megan Moore had a clever little flick and popped it in behind the back line to
Mickayla Mury, who was running on to it. She did a great job of burying it."
The Falcons nearly ended the game as the clock expired in regulation, but Moore's first-time volley from the top of the box carried inches wide of the right post.
The SPU women remain in the Midwest for a game on Saturday at noon Pacific Time against UC Colorado Springs. They visit Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday before starting Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Sept. 16 at Simon Fraser.
"Now it's about recovery," Busey explained. "We're on the road here for a little while. As euphoric as a win like this is and as happy as we feel, we need to take care of the details to be ready for that next opportunity on Saturday."
