SEATTLE –
Darian Burns equaled her career-high score to tie for third place on the vault and was fourth in the all-around competition Friday for Seattle Pacific, which placed third in a women's gymnastics meet won by ninth-ranked Washington at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Burns earned a 9.825 on the vault, the highest score this season by a Falcon on that apparatus. That helped the sophomore forge a four-event total of 38.875.
The host Huskies finished atop the team standings with a season-high total of 197.400 points and UC Davis was second with a score of 195.500. They are both NCAA Division I competitors.
Division II SPU surpassed the 192-point plateau for the third consecutive week, compiling a team score of 192.700.
UW senior Hailey Burleson captured the vault (9.850), balance beam (9.925) and floor exercise (9.925) titles en route to a winning total of 39.600 all-around points. UC Davis gymnasts claimed second and third place in the all-around as Kyla Kessler accumulated 39.250 points and Alexis Brown 39.150.
Burleson placed second on the uneven bars (9.900), an event won by Husky teammate Monica Riley with a 9.950.
Along with the vault, Burns was the Falcons finest performer on the bars (9.675), placing ninth overall.
Sophomore
Miyuki Matsune earned a 9.725 on the balance beam and her 12th-place finish was tops among SPU competitors in that event. She performed a one-armed routine as her broken left hand is heavily bandaged.
Itzia San Roman had the Falcons best effort on the floor with an 11th-place mark of 9.775. She finished sixth with 38.525 all-around points and freshman teammate
McKenna Zimmermann was seventh with 38.475.
"All of our all-arounds hit great scores, in the mid-to-high 38s. They really carried the team," said SPU coach
Laurel Tindall. "The specialists need to feel that they have to hit because they are only doing one event. That's kind of always been the philosophy that we've communicated to them."
Freshman
Shelbi Spivey had a stellar meet, posting her highest marks as a collegian in the two events she competed. Spivey scored 9.60 on the vault and then tied her bars best of 9.625. She was an exhibition performer on the beam and received a non-counting score of 9.500.
The Falcons faltered on the bars with two falls in the final rotation after notching outstanding scores in their first three events. They posted an impressive season-high 48.650-point team total on the vault in the third rotation.
"It was a little bit of a disappointing finish," Tindall said. "We had such a great start on the first three events, beginning with the beam and then were good on the floor and great on the vault. We hit bars great last week and they are certainly capable of doing that. I expect those kids to do a little better on that event next week in our final home meet."
NEXT MEET
The Seattle Pacific gymnasts stay in Seattle to host their final home meet, next Saturday, March 17. They will entertain Air Force in Brougham Pavilion on the SPU campus.
BEAM
• SPU started the meet on the balance beam and compiled the third highest team score of the season at 48.250.
• The first three Falcons up on the beam,
McKenna Zimmermann,
Sienna Brane and
Darian Burns, each received the same 9.650 score. That streak was broken when
Lena Wirth in the No. 4 registered a 9.650.
• Brane was the only SPU gymnast to establish a new season high on that apparatus, adding one-tenth to her previous best with a 9.625.
• Sophomore
Miyuki Matsune again provided consistency from her beam anchor spot with the team's top score of 9.725. She scored above 9.70 for the fifth consecutive meet.

• After back-to-back weeks of 9.700 scores on the floor,
Itzia San Roman tallied a season-best 9.775 that equaled the top mark of her career.
• For the second straight week a potential score of 9.850 by
