COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomores Lena Wirth and Miyuki Matsune rose to the occasion to stand side-by-side on the post-meet podium.
 
Wirth and Matsune tied for fifth on the balance beam as Seattle Pacific put together a season-high score to finish fifth at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's gymnastics championships in the Air Force Academy's Cadet West Gym on Saturday night.
 
Totaling 194.300 points, the fifth-seeded Falcons hit their highest score in nearly two years. It was their best-ever sum at the MPSF meet. The team's previous high this season had been 193.225, on March 4 at San Jose State.
 
San Jose State repeated as champion with a score of 195.975. UC Davis took second for the second consecutive year (195.200), followed by host Air Force (194.975) and Sacramento State (194.775). Alaska Anchorage was sixth (192.200).
 
SPU is the only NCAA Division II team in the conference. All five other teams are Division I competitors.

 

Wirth (Roseville, Calif.) and Matsune (West Covina, Calif.) stuck their respective routines, each establishing a career high of 9.850 to tie for fifth place.
 
Other SPU gymnasts reaching the awards stand were Darian Burns (So., Atlanta, Ga.), and McKenna Zimmerman (Fr., San Jose, Calif.), finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, in all-around. Burns' four-event sum came to 38.975 and Zimmerman reached a new high for her career at 38.800.
 
San Jose State's Kaitlin Won captured the all-around title with 39.225 points, including third-place scores of 9.875 on beam and 9.800 on bars.
 
The Spartans' Chelsey Andrada was first on vault (9.875). Anna Salamore of Air Force swung to victory on bars (9.875). Alexis Brown of UC Davis claimed top prize in floor (9.925) for the second year in a row, and she shared the beam title with Air Force's Analise Howard (9.925).
 
Seattle Pacific's rotation began with a bars score of 48.275, the second-highest of the season. Burns topped the squad with a 9.750, matching her best of the year. Brittany Atchison (Sr., Biloxi, Miss.) was next, equaling her career and season best of 9.650.
 
The Falcons proved solid on beam with a score of 48.950, eclipsing their season-high. Wirth broke beyond 9.775 for the first time in her career while Matsune's previous career high was 9.800. Bolstering SPU's beam performance was Itzia San Roman (Jr., Burnaby, B.C.) with a 9.800.

 

Following a bye, SPU moved to floor exercise and a total of 48.425 – the fifth straight meet of 48.050 or higher. Zimmerman tied her career best, dancing to a 9.750, with Burns next at 9.725. Atchison, competing for the first time this year, scored a 9.675.
 
Closing out on vault, the Falcons came close to a season high with 48.600. Burns and Autumn Huskie (Fr., Golden, Colo.) each landed a 9.750.
 
Named to the all-MPSF second team following the meet were Burns on vault, bars, floor and all-around; Matsune on beam; and Zimmerman and San Roman in all-around.
 
Selected Seattle Pacific athletes will compete at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, set for April 13-15 in Denton, Texas. It is unlikely the Falcons will receive a team berth to the national meet, but several SPU gymnasts figure to earn at-large invitations.
 
Burns should have an opportunity to defend the national floor exercise championship that she won last year in Seattle.
 
The eight-team field and list of individual qualifiers will be announced Monday.
