Frosh Keeper Sets SPU Saves Record

Riley Travis stopped 16 shots in Thursday's scoreless draw at Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – Freshman goalkeeper Riley Travis shattered the school single-game record with 16 saves Thursday, helping short-handed Seattle Pacific battle to a 0-0 draw at Chico State in a non-conference women's soccer game at University Stadium.

The Falcons (2-0-1) have not surrendered a goal this season in 290 minutes of action. Travis collected three saves in each of the two, 10-minute overtime sessions.

A product of Seattle's Ballard High School, just three miles from the SPU campus, Travis posted her second shutout and has played 200 minutes of scoreless soccer as a collegian.

She surpassed the SPU standard by three saves, replacing Molly Stinson in the record book. Stinson, who graduated last spring after compiling a school-record 274 career saves, stopped 13 shots on October 29, 2016 for the previous single-game record.

Travis preserved Thursday's shutout, registering one last save with three seconds showing on the clock. Erin Woods fired a firm 10-yard blast that Travis was well positioned to catch as time expired.

"Riley was absolutely amazing," exclaimed SPU coach Arby Busey. "In just her second college game she faced a lot of shots and made some unreal saves. She was in the right place at the right time every time tonight and she bailed us out when we needed her."

Travis faced a 31-shot barrage from the Wildcats (0-0-3), who played their third straight scoreless draw. Aiding that onslaught was a player advantage for Chico.

Six minutes into the second half, Falcons leading scorer Kasey Reeve was sent off for a hard foul near midfield against Jamie Ikeda. Reeve was issued a straight red card at 51:03 and her team competed with just 10 players for the next 59 minutes.

"We're never going to be happy with a draw, necessarily, but the result aside it was an amazing performance from the girls who were on the field," said Busey.

"I couldn't be prouder of our kids with their effort and the attitude to see things out. It seemed like every time we turned around we were working against something else. And everything that seemingly went wrong, they responded to admirably."

Sophomore Sophia Chilczuk attempted six of SPU's 10 shots and two of them were on frame, forcing Chico goalkeeper Brenna Meier to make a pair of her three saves.

The Falcons had a through-ball goal disallowed in the 63rd minute by an offside call.

The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half, despite a 12-4 Chico shot margin. SPU's Chilczuk attempted the game's first two shots and the second required a save by Meier.

The Wildcats attempted seven consecutive shots to conclude the opening period.

Sarah Emigh nearly broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. Her header, off a Chico State corner kick, was denied with a diving save by Travis. The Falcons keeper fended off another Emigh shot with four minutes left in the last overtime session. Travis leaped to tap a hard header over the crossbar after another dangerous corner kick.

The Falcons remain on the road to visit San Francisco State on Saturday at 1 p.m. They return home to host Cal State San Bernardino at Interbay Stadium on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
