SEATTLE – The Simon Fraser Clan went deep on Saturday afternoon– and then wouldn't let Seattle Pacific climb out of the hole.
Riley Evans scored 20 points, her fifth game this season with at least that many, but Simon Fraser drained 15 shots from 3-point range and limited the Falcons to just one field goal in the fourth quarter on the way to a 69-60 Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball victory in Brougham Pavilion..
Senior guard Evans was one of three players in double figures for Seattle Pacific (5-10, 4-4 GNAC). Sophomore guard
Hailee Bennett added 14 points, and senior center
Carly Rataushk had 12.
The Clan (9-6, 5-3 GNAC) hit nearly twice as many shots from downtown (15) as they did from closer to the basket (eight). Simon Fraser shot 65 times for the game, with 40 of those shots from behind the arc. SPU was 5 of 15 from long range, with Evans hitting 4 of 8.
Saturday's game was tied eight times and had 15 lead changes. SPU leveled the score for the last time at 49-49 on a pair of Evans free throws at the outset of the fourth quarter.
Simon Fraser put the next four on the board and went in front for good. Ozioma Nwabuke hit a free throw, then Tyler Drynan came through with a 3. That put the Clan up, 53-49.
Seattle Pacific got as close as one after that, 57-56 on pair of Rataushk free throws with 4:27 to play. But the Falcons managed just four more points the rest of the way, all at the foul line.
Even so, SPU was still within reach, down just 63-58 inside the three-minute mark. Simon Fraser then had an unusual four-point play to push the lead to nine at 67-58 with just 2:31 showing. Kendal Sands drained a 3-pointer from deep in the left corner. As that shot was heading toward the hoop, Rataushk was whistled for a foul way over on the other side of the lane.
Sands' shot counted, and Samantha Beauchamp went to the free throw line, hitting one of her two shots.
The only fourth-quarter field goal for the Falcons a short shot by Rataushk straight in front of the hoop off a feed from
Jaylee Albert. That brought SPU within 55-53 and 7:12 still on the clock.
