INDIANAPOLIS – When it comes to academic success by student-athletes, Seattle Pacific once again is part of a very elite 11.

For the ninth consecutive year, SPU has been bestowed with a Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence by the NCAA.

School athletic departments that achieve a four-year academic success rate of 90 percent or higher are presented with the distinctive award. For the most recent four-year period, Seattle Pacific had an ASR of 93. By definition, that means 93 percent of all student-athletes who entered college from 2009-12 graduated within six years of initial enrollment.

Only 11 schools – including Seattle Pacific – have earned the award all nine years that it has been presented.

"Once again, I am extremely proud of this recognition of our student-athletes and their academic prowess," Falcons athletic director Jackson Stava said. "Continued successes like this in the academic arena have become a hallmark of Seattle Pacific athletics, and it is very fulfilling to have those successes recognized."

Essentially, almost all Division II student-athletes are considered when calculating the percentages. That includes transfers as well as those who aren't receiving any scholarship aid.

10674SPU is one of two schools in the 93rd percentile. The other is UC San Diego, which is one another of the 11 schools to get the award all nine years.

Seattle Pacific is the only school from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference on the list of 32 that earned the award.

The West Region has four winners of the award. Along with Seattle Pacific and UC San DIego, the other two are from the Pacific West Conference: Point Loma Nazarene with an ASR of 96, and Dominican, with an ASR of 95.

Just as coaches emphasize team play, Stava said that same element factors into the academic plaudits that Falcon student-athletes regularly receive, including the NCAA award.

"I want to thank the student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and faculty for creating a culture within which academic success is both championed and celebrated," he said. "Receiving this award again is a remarkable achievement and a great representation of one of the many facets that make Seattle Pacific unique."
