SEATTLE – A big second-half comeback nearly got the Seattle Pacific Falcons over the hump on Friday night.
But not quite.
Abril Rexach Roure scored 19 points – 17 of those during the final 20 minutes – and SPU trimmed a 13-point halftime deficit all the way down to one before Colorado School of Mines pulled away to a 66-55 victory in the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic women's basketball tournament in Brougham Pavilion.
Madi Hingston added 11 points for Seattle Pacific (0-5) and grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.
The Falcons were kept off the board for the first 4½ minutes of the game on Iron Coaching Court as Colorado Mines (1-2) built an 8-0 lead. It was 16-5 by the end of the first quarter, as both teams took 13 shots, but the Orediggers hit seven while SPU drained just two.
Mines extended the lead to 13 points by halftime at 27-14. SPU then came out with some stepped-up defensive intensity, starting the third quarter with six straight stops, and getting within six at 27-21.
The Orediggers got it back out to double-digits at 42-31, and it was still an eight-margin at 44-36 going into the fourth quarter.
Seattle Pacific opened the fourth with a 7-0 run: a 3-pointer by Hingston, a 14-footer from the right of the lane by Rexach Roure, and a jumper by
Ashley Alter. That trimmed the deficit to one at 44-43 with 6:50 remaining.
The teams traded baskets, leaving it at 46-45 for Colorado Mines at the 4:58 mark. But the Orediggers rang up six points in a row for a 52-45 advantage with 3:06 left and gradually pulled away.
"We did not manufacture stops when we needed them in the second half," Falcons coach
Mike Simonson said. "I thought we guarded pretty well in the first half, and we really were clicking on full cylinders to start the second half. I just felt like we did not end the third and fourth quarters very well. They crushed us inside." (Mines outscored SPU in the paint, 36-20.)
Rexach Roure hit 5 of 8 from the field, including 2 of 3 from behind the 3-point arc. Hingston was 4 of 10, draining 2 of 3 from downtown. She also had two of SPU's five steals.
"Abril scoring the ball was great – she really was confident," Simonson said. "Madi played a good second half (with eight of her 11 points). I was really pleased with
Grace Sterk. She was very good defensively in the post. She played 29 minutes, and that's a lot for a post player. But I felt I couldn't take her off the floor because she was doing so well defensively."
