DeKALB, Ill. – Darian Burns placed third in both the all-around and uneven bars competitions and was fifth on the vault Friday for Seattle Pacific, which surpassed 190 points for the second time this season for a fourth-place finish at the Northern Illinois quad meet in the Convocation Center.

 

Burns, a junior, opened will a fall on the balance beam for a subpar score of 8.950. She recovered to post marks 9.750 or higher on the three remaining rotations for a four-event total of 38.225.
 
Along with scores of 9.775 on the bars and 9.750 on the vault, Burns earned a ninth-place mark of 9.750 on the floor exercise. She was the Falcons top performer in every category, except for the beam.
 
Freshman Kayla Chan achieved SPU's best beam score, finishing 14th overall with a 9.600.
 
Falcons senior Itzia San Roman compiled a fourth-place total of 37.900 in the all-around and sophomore McKenna Zimmermann was fifth at 37.450.
 
Courtney Mitchell and Aleah Turon received matching scores of 9.850 on the vault to lead a sweep of the top-three places in that event for Lindenwood. Mitchell also placed first in the all-around with 39.225 points and teammate Ryan Henry was second with 38.825.
 
The Falcons overcame a slow start on the beam (46.075) with solid team efforts on the floor (48.300) and vault (47.975). They finished with a stellar bars set (48.275), one week after struggling on that apparatus.
 
SPU's 190.625 team score was its second-highest output of the year, trailing only the 192.625 registered at home on Jan. 18.
 
Northern Illinois overcame a 0.325-point deficit during the final rotation to claim the team title. The Huskies compiled 49.075 points on the floor, the highest event total of the night for any team, to overtake Lindenwood with a final score of 194.500.
 
Lindenwood was second in the team standings with 194.350 points and Kent State was third at 192.075.
 
NIU's Morgan Hooper topped the beam field (9.875) and tied for first on the bars (9.825) with Dara Williams of Kent State.
 
Anna Martucci claimed first place for the host Huskies with a mark of 9.875.
 
 
NEXT MEET
The SPU gymnasts complete a three-meet road trip next weekend at Air Force. The four-team competition, including Brigham Young and Springfield, is slated for Saturday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. Pacific Time in Colorado Springs.
 
VAULT
• The Falcons finished below 48 team points on the vault for the first time this season, but by the smallest of margins with a 47.975.
• Darian Burns score of 9.750 made her the team leader on that apparatus for the third time in four meets this season.
• Junior Lena Wirth equaled her season-high score of 9.675, a figure that is just one-tenth off her career best of 9.775.

BARS
• An event that was a struggle last week became a strength for SPU, which had the meet's second-best bars total with 48.275. That is 3.325 points better than last week's 44.950.
• The 48.275 is the Falcons second-best bars score of the season, trailing only the 48.325 posted at home on Jan. 18.
• A trio of Falcons achieved season-best scores: Jadacie Durst (9.625), Miyuki Matsune (9.600) and Itzia San Roman (9.600). That was a career-high mark for Durst.

• SPU opened the meet on the beam and got off to a rough start. The 46.075-point team total was the lowest of the season and the only time the Falcons have not scored in the 47s.
• Freshman Kayla Chan matched her career high of 9.600 to top all Falcons. That is the second time she has been the team's leading scorer on an event, having done so on the floor on Jan. 18.
• Falls forced the Falcons to count scores of 8.950, 9.000 and 9.075.

• SPU scored in the 48-point range on the floor for fourth straight meet.
• Three Falcons received the exact same score of 9.625: Kylie Reese, Kayla Chan and Itzia San Roman.
• Zimmermann competed in the floor lineup for the first time this season, enabling her to compile a fifth-place all-around mark of 37.450.
• Darian Burns, the 2017 national floor champion, remained consistent in that event. Her mark of 9.750 kept her streak intact of scoring above 9.700 in every meet this season.
