SEATTLE – The margin wasn't much. But it was enough for the Seattle Pacific Falcons to put one into the gymnastics win column.

Darian Burns
Darian Burns tied her career high with first-place score of 9.825 on the vault, and also had the winning floor exercise score and all-around total on Friday night, helping SPU edge Sacramento State in a dual meet in Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons finished with 192.375 points, two-tenths more than the 192.175 put up by the NCAA Division I Hornets. That was their first victory against Sac State since 2005 (192.375 to 191.950 on March 5 of that year in Seattle).

Due to geography, Seattle Pacific is forced to compete primarily against Division I opponents that are allowed to issue more scholarships. The other NCAA Division II schools are located in the Midwest and East Coast. Twenty of 24 foes on this season's schedule are Division I competitors, making victories rare.

"It has been a while," SPU coach Laurel Tindall said of her team's last victory. The Falcons outpointed Hamline, 191.500 to 186.750, at home on Jan. 27, 2017.

"We don't get that many wins, so getting any win is good especially against a Division I team."

Friday marked the second extremely close call between the two teams this winter. In the season opener on Jan. 11 in California, Sac State prevailed by 0.125, 189.950 to 189.825.

SPU was in the 192-point neighborhood for the second straight week and the third time this season – with all three of those coming at home.

Falcons junior Burns started and ended her night with big performances. Along with the 9.825 on the vault, she had a 9.850 on the floor en route to a four-event total of 38.600.

Burns now has six event wins for the season. She also was second on the uneven bars on Friday with a 9.825.

The Hornets' Jordyn Brent compiled a second-place score of 38.050 in the all-around and Falcons sophomore McKenna Zimmermann was third with 37.725.

Jackie Sampson claimed a couple event titles for Sacramento, winning the bars with a score of 9.850 and the balance beam with 9.825.

Kayla Chan
SPU put a pair of career highs into the book on the beam: 9.675 for sophomore Haven Lanzador and a 9.650 for freshman Kayla Chan. Their previous bests were 9.650 and 9.600, respectively. Lanzador's routine was her first of the season on any event.

The Falcons were dealt a setback before the meet began when senior all-arounder Itzia San Roman injured an ankle during warmups. She was scratched from three events and competed only on the bars. San Roman took advantage of her availability in the one event, placing six on the bars with a season-best mark of 9.650.

"That was just unfortunate right in warmup," Tindall said. "Losing Itzia was huge so I was pleased with the people that we put into the lineup to replace her in three events. They had limited experience in the lineup and they stepped up.

"Haven was one of the ones who had to fill in for Itzia, and she was really good tonight on the beam."

Miyuki Matsune turned in a pair of fourth-place performances. Falcons junior scored a season-best 9.700 on the bars and followed with a 9.750 on the beam.

SPU sophomore Jadacie Durst received a floor score of 9.725 to tie for fourth in that event.

NEXT MEET
SPU winds up a three-meet homestand next Friday by hosting San Jose State at 7:00 p.m. Those teams met previously on Jan. 25 in a quad meet in San Jose.
