SEATTLE – The points kept coming for Central Washington – and kept not coming for Seattle Pacific.
Cici West's seventh double-double of the season wasn't enough on Thursday night as Central put 16 straight on the board in the first quarter, part of a 24-2 run, and stayed in control the rest of the way to beat the Falcons in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game, 74-56.
Senior forward West scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, leading SPU (7-13, 6-7 GNAC) in both departments.
Jaylee Albert added 13 points for the Falcons.
Seattle Pacific was down just 8-6 after senior center
Carly Rataushk drained a jumper from the right of the foul line with 7:48 left in the opening quarter.
But it was during the next 6 minutes, 15 seconds when the Wildcats (13-7, 8-5 GNAC) put up their 16 in a row, with 12 of those coming from 3-point territory. That boosted their lead to 24-6.
During that same stretch, the Falcons missed seven straight shots before senior guard Albert put in a 15-foot jumper from the right of the lane with 1:19 left in the quarter to make it 24-8.
Central Washington responded with another eight in a row, making it 32-8. That spurt ended when freshman guard / forward
Ashley Alter got to the foul line and hit a pair of free throws with 7:26 left in the half. It was also Alter who drained the next field goal for the Falcons, a 3-pointer from the right side with 6:57 to go.
The closest SPU came after that was 62-50 when
Madi Hingston nailed a trey with 7:53 remaining in the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
-- Of Central's 45 first-half points, 27 came from downtown.
--
West got nine of her 17 points at the foul line, where she hit 9 of 13. In the last three games, she has gotten to the stripe 26 times, hitting 20 of those (76.9 percent), well above her season percentage of 62.3.
-- The only other Falcon who got to the line was
Alter, and she hit all four of hers.
--
West's 11 rebounds put her back alone on top of the GNAC list. She has 181 for the season, a 9.05 per-game average. Central's
Kassidy Malcolm, who was dead even with West coming into the game (each of them had 170) collected eight, leaving her average at 8.9.
-- It was a tough for SPU leading scorer
Riley Evans (14.5 per game) and third-leading scorer
Hailee Bennett (9.5), as both were kept off the board.
