SEATTLE – This career-high thing is getting to be a nice habit for
Kayla Chan.
The Seattle Pacific freshman set two more on Friday night, one on the vault and one on the balance beam, as the Falcons closed their home schedule with a dual meet against San Jose State in Brougham Pavilion.
The Spartans got into the 194-point range for the third time this season, tallying 194.075 to top SPU's 192.525.
Chan, from Santa Clarita, California, came up with three career-high performances during the just-completed three-meet homestand.
She didn't waste any time getting started on Friday. She was Seattle Pacific's second vaulter, and came through with a third-place score of 9.700. Her previous best had been 9.600, which she hit twice earlier this month: first at Air Force on Feb. 9, and then a week later at home in the SPU Quad meet.
Barely half an hour later, Chan delivered another 9.700, this time on the beam. That marked the second week in a row she came up with a best-ever performance on that event, topping the 9.65 she scored last Friday against Sacramento State.
"Kayla has been really good at home these last three meets," said SPU coach
Laurel Tindall. "She did an awesome vault tonight. It's only worth a 9.8 start value and she scored a 9.7, so you can't do to much better than that. She was also very good on beam and floor for us."
Darian Burns notched her seventh event win of the season for the Falcons. The junior took top honors on the uneven bars (9.800), was the floor runner-up (9.750) and tied for third on the vault (9.700).
Injuries slowed
Kylie Reese early this season, but she showed no ill effects Friday. The Falcons sophomore established a career high of 9.575 on the bars followed by a season-best mark of 9.700 on the floor.
SPU sophomore
McKenna Zimmermann finished second among all-arounders with a season-best 38.600 points. Burns compiled a four-event total of 38.275 to finish fourth.
The Spartans Taylor Chan was the all-around winner with 39.225 points. Included in that total were first-place marks on the vault (9.725), beam (9.850) and floor (9.900).
For the first time this winter, the Falcons hit for 48 or more points on all four events.
"We were really consistent and got our first 48 on beam this year," said Tindall. "Our scores were in the low 48s, unfortunately, in some events. But with the people we didn't have competing due to injuries, it was great to be able to be consistent on all four events and get all 48s."
NEXT MEET
Seattle Pacific has two road meets to conclude the regular season, the first of which is next Friday at UC Davis. It will be the second time this season the Falcons have gone up against the Aggies. The first one was the home opener on Jan. 18 when SPU scored a season-high 192.625. Next Friday's tri-meet at Davis also will include Air Force.
"Hopefully we will be able to go on the road and get these 192s or better," Tindall said. "We'll see if we can get Itzia (San Roman) back into the vault and floor lineup next week and for some other kids, just getting a little better training in this week will be key."
