CORVALLIS, Ore. –
Darian Burns shared top honors in all-around and also tied for third on uneven bars as Seattle Pacific opened the gymnastics regular season Saturday with a runner-up result at the Oregon State triangular meet in Gill Coliseum.
The host and 15
th-ranked Beavers, who opened a week ago in Florida, handily won the meet with 195.325 points. SPU was next with 189.525 and Louisiana's Centenary totaled 182.625.
For the Falcons, it was the first competition under new head coach,
Sarah Jean Marshall.
This was the first meet in 47 years of SPU gymnastics that didn't involve Laurel Tindall as either a competitor or coach. Tindall, who competed for the Falcons in 1974-75, retired last year after 44 seasons at the helm. Marshall served as her assistant the past 10 years.
Seattle Pacific began the meet solidly on the uneven parallel bars, and senior Burns (Decatur, Ga.), the 10-time All-American, scored a 9.725, with senior
Sienna Brane (Snohomish, Wash.) taking fifth place at 9.650. Junior
Shelbi Spivey (Woodway, Texas) matched her career high at 9.625 for sixth. Sophomore
Ciello Magsanide (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) contributed a 9.575. Oregon State's Halli Briscoe won with a 9.850.
Kayli Tran
Behind the career-best fourth-place score of 9.800 for sophomore
Kayli Tran (Rancho Santa Margarita, Ca.) Seattle Pacific followed with a 47.625 on beam. Freshman
Alixandra Pierce (Saskatoon, Sk.) stuck a 9.725 in her collegiate debut to tie for fifth. Isis Lowery of the Beavers won with 9.875.
But the Falcons struggled mightily on their final two rotations, scoring just 46.950 on floor and 46.875 on vault.
Burns led the way on floor at 9.725, placing fifth overall, and sophomore Kyla Chan (Santa Clarita, Ca.) was next at 9.600. Lowery was first with 9.925.
Finishing on vault, the Falcons got a career-high 9.800 from senior
Lena Wirth (Roseville, Ca.), who tied for third place, and a 9.675 from Chan, just shy of her career best. Kaitlyn Yanish of OSU led the way at 9.850.
Burns, sustaining setbacks on vault and beam, shared all-around honors at 36.775 with Centenary's Cami Bea Austin.
Seattle Pacific's score was the lowest score since February 2018 and lowest to open a season since 2017. It was forced to count one sub-9.0 score on both floor and vault.
