SEATTLE –
Miyuki Matsune came through with a trio of terrific performances, and the Seattle Pacific Falcons broke through the 190-point women's gymnastics scoring barrier on Friday night.
Matsune tied her career high on the uneven bars while setting season bests on the balance beam and floor exercise, and
Ciello Magsanide set a career high on the bars, helping SPU rack up 190.300 points in Friday's home-opening dual meet against Air Force.
Seattle Pacific had season-high team scores on the vault (47.600) and floor (47.925). The Falcons were in the 46s on both events last week. They surpassed, by 0.775, the team total of 189.525 compiled in last week's season-opener at Oregon State.
Air Force, however, went home with the win, scoring 192.450 points. The visitors captured first-place all four events, including vault and bars titles by Anna Salamone, who earned matching scores of 9.800 on both. Daija Stevenson topped the beam field, also with a 9.800.
Tyler Davis earned the highest score of the meet with a 9.850 on the floor. Davis parlayed that floor win into an all-around victory with a four-event total of 38.650. SPU senior
Darian Burns registered 38.650 points as the all-around runner-up.
Sarah Jean Marshall
HOME COACHING DEBUT
Friday marked the first time since 1975 that the Falcons gymnasts stepped into Brougham Pavilion without Laurel Tindall at the helm. She retired in May after 44 seasons as the head coach, passing the torch to
Sarah Jean Marshall, a former SPU standout competitor and 10-year assistant coach.
Marshall was thrilled with the environment in her home coaching debut.
"It was awesome to have a lot of fans. We had a large group of faculty and staff in the gym and a really good crowd ,which helped with energy. The girls did well overall, with plenty of room for improvement."
A senior, Matsune pulled down a 9.725 on the bars, good for second place behind Salamone (9.800). Matsune's mark matched the career tally that she posted at the end of her freshman season in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation meet.
Matsune then scored a 9.750 on the beam, also good for second place, and a 9.500 on the floor exercise, which was 10th.
MIYUKI MATSUNE INTERVIEW
"Miyuki had a really awesome meet," Marshall said. "She stumbled in a couple events last weekend and came back great today. She has just been so consistent in the gym.
"She's been a leader working hard and ready to make a big impact her senior year. We just saw the start of that this meet, and we're excited to see her continue to grow."
Ciello Magsanide
Magsanide scored a 9.625 on the bars, giving her fifth place That topped the 9.575 she had at Oregon State last Saturday.
Senior
Lena Wirth was second on the vault, scoring 9.750. She tied for second place overall and led the team on that event for the second straight week.
Alixandra Pierce
Alixandra Pierce unveiled her distinctive floor routine and was rewarded with a 9.700 that put the Falcons freshman in third place in that event.
"Sometimes home meets can be even more nerve-wracking, especially for freshmen, because there's a lot of people you know there. It feels like pressure to do really well at home," Marshall described. "It was amazing to see Alix get out there on floor. We are all really pumped for her on floor this year.
"She is so dramatic. It's a unique routine that stands out a bit. She has really high, difficult tumbling, with five-tenths bonus in two tumbling passes, so that's pretty impressive. She's dramatic and we know that she's going to be successful on that event."
