SEATTLE –
Darian Burns placed second on the floor exercise and third in the all-around Sunday for Seattle Pacific, which posted season-high team totals on three events en route to a third-place mark of 191.575 at the San Jose State Triangular women's gymnastics meet.
The SPU senior registered a stellar season-high score of 9.825 on the floor, a full tenth better than her previous best. That figure was topped only by a 9.875 turned in by San Jose State's Taylor Chan, who also won the all-around title with 39.100 points.
The Spartans Tia Gin, who was first on the balance beam with a 9.825, compiled a second-place score of 38.550 in the all-around.
Burns' four-event tally of 38.275 included a sixth-place uneven bars mark of 9.800, her season best. She scored 9.475 on the beam and 9.175 on the vault.
Darian Burns
"She's just starting to hit her stride this season and I know she has even higher expectations for herself," first-year coach Sarah Jean Marshal said of the SPU's standout senior. Burns is a two-time national champion, claiming the all-around crown last year after winning the floor title as a freshman in 2017.
"We're excited to see what Darian can do with this last season at SPU."
Boise State captured first place in the team competition with strong performances in the vault and bars. The Broncos collected 195.525 team points and San Jose was second with 194.675.
Seattle Pacific's total of 191.575 was well over a point superior to its previous season-high of 190.300 established at home on Jan. 17. The Falcons opened on the bars Sunday and the gymnasts combined for a season-high 48.200 in that event. Two more season bests followed in the next two rotations, with a 47.725 on the beam and 48.225 on the floor.
"It was a good day," Marshall exclaimed. "We had a lot more consistency overall between all of the events, which was great to see. We still counted a few falls, but this was a really solid score and we have lots of ability to raise that even higher."
BSU boasted the top-five bars performers, led by Emily Muhenhaupt whose score of 9.975 was the finest on any apparatus. Gabriella Bouza topped the vault field with a 9.825 and was one of three Broncos' placers among the top-five in the event.
Two of the meet's top beam performers were Falcons as freshman
Alixandra Pierce received a fourth-place score of 9.775 and senior
Miyuki Matsune tied for fifth at 9.750.
Lena Wirth
Lena Wirth, an SPU senior, tied for sixth place on the vault with a 9.700. She has been the team's top vaulter in each of the first three meets, scoring 9.800 in the opener on Jan. 11 and 9.750 last week in Seattle.
Eight career-high marks were surpassed by Falcons gymnasts, two of them from Pierce with the 9.775 on the beam and 9.725 on the floor.
"We're so grateful to have Alix on this team. She is an amazing gymnast and has proven to be quite the competitor," Marshall said of the first-year Falcons competitor from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Sophomore newcomer
Delaney Fields exhibitioned on a trio of events and earned a score of 9.500 on the vault, 9.550 on the bars and a 9.400 on the floor.
In addition, eighth season-best scores were equaled or eclipsed. That list featured Burns on the bars (9.800) and floor (9.825) along with Matsune on the beam (9.750) and floor (9.600).
